Family-Friendly Hotels in Kyushu: Hot Springs, Beaches and Cities by Prefecture

From hot spring towns with private family baths to seaside resorts, a parent's guide to choosing where to stay

204 family-friendly hotels in Kyushu, verified by Kids Stay: 132 with tatami rooms, 61 with private onsen baths, 69 with in-room baths, 52 with crib rental and 27 with indoor play rooms. Every listing is checked against the official hotel website or Rakuten Travel.

When you pick a family hotel in Kyushu, it can be hard to decide between hot springs and the sea, or which prefecture to use as your base. Each prefecture here has its own distinct appeal, so working backward from your children's ages and how much travel they can handle makes the choice easier. We list 204 hotels in Kyushu, from hot spring inns (ryokan) and seaside resorts to city hotels close to the station.

If your family wants to relax in hot springs, Oita and Kumamoto Prefectures are the place to start. Beppu Onsen, Yufuin Onsen, Kurokawa Onsen and Aso all have many inns with private family baths (kazokuburo, baths you can reserve for your own group), so you can soak without worrying about other guests. Across Kyushu, 61 hotels offer a private family bath. 45 hotels also have gentle, mild "simple" hot spring water, which makes them a good fit for a baby's first hot spring bath.

For beaches and leisure, look at Huis Ten Bosch (a Dutch-themed resort park) and Iojima in Nagasaki Prefecture, Seagaia in Miyazaki Prefecture, and the Ibusuki and Kirishima hot spring areas in Kagoshima Prefecture. If you want city strolling and easy transport, Hakata and Tenjin in Fukuoka Prefecture make a great base. Ureshino Onsen and Karatsu in Saga Prefecture are easy side trips from Fukuoka, offering hot springs and a seaside setting.

The first things to check are the rooms and the meals. Japanese-style rooms and Japanese-Western rooms (with tatami floors) are reassuring for crawling babies and bedtime routines, and 132 hotels have them. On the food side, 79 hotels serve toddler meals and 74 hotels accommodate food allergies. Even if your child can only eat certain foods right now, this helps you narrow down your options.

If you are traveling with a toddler and worry about rainy days, it is worth adding the 27 hotels with a kids' room or playroom to your list. Having somewhere to play inside the hotel gives children a chance to reset, even after a long trip.

Travel tips

Travel times in Kyushu can add up quickly once you cross prefecture lines. With young children, the key is to limit how many prefectures you visit on one trip. Private family baths at hot spring towns are sometimes reservation-based, so it is reassuring to check available time slots when you check in. Choosing one of the 69 hotels with a private bath or open-air bath in the guest room, or one of the 44 hotels that serve meals in your room, lets you settle in and relax after a long journey.

Best season

Much of Kyushu has a mild climate, and spring and autumn bring gentle weather that makes getting around easy with children. Summer is fun at the seaside resorts in Miyazaki, Kagoshima and Nagasaki Prefectures, while winter suits a slow stay in the hot spring towns of Oita and Kumamoto Prefectures, with a private family bath all to yourselves. Highland areas such as Aso and the Kuju Plateau get cold in winter, so pack warm layers. The rainy season and typhoon season can disrupt plans, so choosing a hotel where you can spend time indoors is a comfort.

Getting there

Fukuoka Airport and Hakata Station are the main gateways to Kyushu. The Kyushu Shinkansen runs from Hakata Station toward Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo without any transfers, and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen serves Nagasaki. You can reach Yufuin and Beppu in Oita Prefecture by limited express train. Mountain hot spring areas such as Aso, Kurokawa Onsen and Takachiho, on the other hand, are mainly reached by car. For Miyazaki and Kagoshima Prefectures, it is also common to fly in and rent a car on arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are good hotels in Kyushu for families with a baby?

expand_more

For a baby, look for a hotel with Japanese-style or Japanese-Western rooms that also lends baby gear. At Ureshino Onsen Hatsunesou, baby bath rental, a hot water pot for preparing formula, bottle sterilizing and baby food are confirmed. At Phoenix Seagaia Ocean Tower, you can borrow a baby crib, bed guards and a stroller. Across Kyushu, 52 hotels lend baby cribs.

Is a family trip to Kyushu inconvenient without a car?

expand_more

Cities such as Hakata and Tenjin in Fukuoka, the area around Nagasaki Station, and Kagoshima City are easy to get around by Shinkansen and public transport, so you should be fine without a car. Mountain areas such as Aso, Kurokawa Onsen, Takachiho and the Kuju Plateau, however, are mainly reached by car. With lots of luggage and children, many families rent a car at the airport or a major station and drive to the hot spring towns.

Are there hotels where children can have fun on rainy days?

expand_more

If rain is a worry, choose a hotel based on what it offers indoors. In Kyushu, 27 hotels have a kids' room or playroom, and 33 hotels have themed rooms, including ones with a slide. Suginoi Hotel and Kamenoi Hotel Aso Park Resort are confirmed to offer features such as a kids' buffet or a children's corner.

Which hotels have a hot spring just for our family?

expand_more

Private family baths are a well-established tradition in Kyushu, and 61 hotels across the region offer them. Even during stages when a public bath feels stressful, you can soak as a family. 69 hotels also have a private bath or open-air bath in the guest room. They are easiest to find in hot spring towns such as Beppu Onsen, Yufuin Onsen and Kurokawa Onsen.

When is the best season for a family trip to Kyushu?

expand_more

Spring and autumn, with their mild weather, are the easiest seasons for families, since travel and sightseeing take less out of everyone. Summer is great for the seaside resorts in Miyazaki, Nagasaki and Kagoshima Prefectures, and winter is lovely in the hot spring towns of Oita and Kumamoto Prefectures. Plans can fall apart during the rainy season and typhoon season, so it is reassuring to choose a hotel with things to do inside, such as play facilities or in-room dining.
