Overview

Nihon Ryokan Utsuwa Beppu Kannawa stands at the foot of Ideyu-zaka in the Kannawa onsen district of Beppu, run in a style that keeps lodging and meals separate. All 15 rooms have an indoor bath filled with onsen flowing directly from the source, so families can bathe on their own without worrying about other guests. Private-hire open-air baths that are among the largest in Japan can also be used 24 hours a day, though only by guests staying in the main building. Children are charged the same rate as adults. No meals are served, so guests are free to eat out, order delivery or bring their own food. The ryokan is a 5-minute walk from Kannawa Bus Terminal.

Rooms

There are 15 rooms in total. The main building's special room, Shinki, is 100.12 sq m with two double beds and accommodates 1 to 5 guests. The main building's standard rooms range from 46.60 sq m to 57.34 sq m, have two semi-double beds and accommodate 1 to 5 guests. In any of these rooms, futon bedding is laid out separately when 3 or more guests stay, so a family of three or more can sleep in the same room. Hanare Yuian has seven detached rooms, each with one king-size bed for 2 guests, an open-air rock bath and an indoor bath.

Dining

This ryokan keeps lodging and meals separate, and no meals are served. Guests are free to eat out, bring in their own food and drinks, or order delivery. Each room has a microwave, but there is no kitchen, and guests may not bring in cooking appliances such as hot plates or gas burners, nor cook yakiniku or barbecue. Guests are also asked to refrain from bringing in food or drink with a strong smell.

Baths and Onsen

The spring water here is a sodium chloride spring containing metasilicic acid, and every room has a bath fed by 100% natural onsen flowing directly from the source. In addition, the private-hire open-air baths Kiseki (45.00 sq m) and Kogane (40.00 sq m), among the largest in Japan, can be used 24 hours a day without a reservation, on a first-come basis; you may have to wait while other guests are using them. These private-hire open-air baths are available to guests staying in the main building and are not available to guests staying at Hanare Yuian, where each room has its own open-air rock bath and indoor bath. The bathing tax is 250 yen for junior high school students and older, and children under 12 are exempt.

Check-in is from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and checkout is by 11 a.m. Children are charged the same rate as adults, and the amount differs depending on whether futon bedding is used. Main building rooms have futon bedding laid out separately when 3 or more guests stay, so a family of three or more can stay in the same room. Every room has an indoor bath, so the family can enjoy the onsen on its own without worrying about other guests.
