Yufuin Onsen Cottage Kohan is a set of whole-cottage rentals with onsen, a 1-minute walk from Lake Kinrin. There are five room types - Kinrin, Sagiri, Hazuki, Yayoi and Yufu - and the log houses Yayoi and Hazuki have onsen indoors, fed straight from the source. Two rock baths on the grounds can be used privately, free of charge as many times as you like. Stays are room-only, but each cottage has a kitchen for cooking your own meals. Barbecues are available for a fee, with elementary school children charged the same rate, and some plans have set children's rates.
Rooms
There are five room types: Kinrin, Sagiri, Hazuki, Yayoi and Yufu. Kinrin, a detached house, suits 4 to 8 guests; its stated capacity is 6, but futon bedding for 10 is provided, and for parties of 7 or more it is recommended to book it together with another room type. Sagiri, a two-story cottage, suits 2 to 7 guests: the second-floor bedroom has three single beds and two sets of futon bedding, and futons can also be laid out on the first floor so the group can sleep across both floors. The log houses Hazuki and Yayoi each suit 1 to 4 guests, and in Yayoi, which has two semi-double beds, you can ask about adding a co-sleeping child or extra futons laid on the floor. Yufu, a Japanese-style tatami room, suits 1 to 3 guests; its 6-tatami room plus a wood-floored area comes to about 10 tatami mats in all, with a kitchen, toilet and washbasin.
Dining
Stays are room-only, with no meals served. Many guests buy bread and other groceries and toast them in the cottage's toaster or cook rice, and a morning coffee at the cafe on the shore of Lake Kinrin, a 2-minute walk away, or breakfast at Yotosha, also 2 minutes on foot, is recommended. Each cottage kitchen has a sink, a cooktop and a grill, along with a full set of equipment including a refrigerator, a microwave, a rice cooker and a hot plate; seasonings and ice are not provided, so bring your own. Barbecues require advance reservation and come with a full set of charcoal, a grill rack, tongs, chairs and tables, and the staff will even light the fire for you. The charge is 750 yen per person, and elementary school children pay the same rate. Ingredients can be picked up at nearby shops such as the A-Coop, a 4-minute drive away.
Baths and Onsen
The water is Yufuin Onsen flowing straight from the source, with no artificial hot-spring water used. Two rock baths on the grounds can be used privately: you lock the door from the inside and guests take turns, and any staying guest may use them. They are open from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. and from 6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and there is no charge no matter how many times you use them. The log houses Yayoi and Hazuki have onsen indoors, and the indoor onsen in Hazuki can be used at any hour, 24 hours a day. Kinrin, Yufu and Sagiri have no indoor onsen, so guests in those cottages use the private-hire baths on the grounds. The water is a simple onsen, and a bathing tax of 250 yen per person is payable separately.
Family-Friendly Notes
The loft in the log house Hazuki is reached by ladder, so families with young children and anyone uneasy about climbing are advised to choose a different room type. Some accommodation plans have set children's rates, and the Kinrin family plan gives a 5% discount on the accommodation charge for elementary school children. Every cottage has an air purifier, and humidifiers are available to borrow. Insects sometimes appear on the grounds, so insect-repellent supplies are placed in each cottage.

Lake Kinrin is a 1-minute walk away. Yufuin Station is about 5 minutes by car or about a 30-minute walk, and the entrance is at the end of the road at the bottom of the steep slope beside Tenso Shrine, which sits below Yotosha on the shore of Lake Kinrin. Parking is free and needs no reservation, but cars with low ground clearance are directed to a different parking area, so getting in touch in advance is recommended.
