forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 3.64 out of 5 (391 reviews). This is a small cooking-focused ryokan with just 7 rooms near Kinrin Lake, and the Rakuten plans state clearly that babies and children are welcome. All three private-hire open-air baths are free of charge, so families can enjoy the skin-beautifying water, flowing straight from the source, on their own. Dinner brings seafood shipped directly from Saganoseki, with both breakfast and dinner served in the room, and allergies are accommodated.

  • paymentsPrice:Free for guests

On the room-only plan you can try the local specialty ryukyu-don (marinated raw fish over rice) free of charge. A child-size portion is prepared for elementary school children, but it is not served to children under school age. The room-only plan itself is limited to guests of elementary school age and older, so it cannot be booked by families traveling with babies or toddlers. Let the ryokan know when you book if you would like it.

Overview

Yufuin Onsen Mokuren is a seafood-focused ryokan with only 7 guest rooms, standing about a 10-minute walk from Kinrin Lake in Yufuin Onsen. Its signature dishes are local fish shipped directly from Saganoseki and the Mokuren nabe hot pot made with Oku-Bungo pork, and all 4 private-hire baths can be used free of charge. There is no communal bath; bathing centers on the private-hire baths, which families have to themselves. Many plans set child rates, but some plans cannot accept babies and toddlers or are limited to guests of elementary school age and older, so checking before you book is recommended.

Rooms

There are only 7 guest rooms, ranging from snug ones to more spacious ones. The largest is Himawari, a 13-tatami Japanese-style tatami room suited to larger parties and families, with futon bedding for up to 8. Nanohana, a Japanese-Western room made up of a tatami area and a Western-style room with twin beds, sleeps 2 on futons and 2 in beds, for a capacity of 2 to 4. Sakura, an 11.5-tatami Japanese-style tatami room with a semi-open-air bath, takes futon bedding for up to 6 and is the most popular room, with dinner guaranteed as in-room dining. For smaller parties there are 7-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms for 1 to 3 guests, along with Kikyo, Sumire and Kuchinashi, each with futon bedding for up to 3. Yuri, a Western-style twin, is for adults only and cannot accept children.

Dining

Dinner centers on sashimi of local fish shipped directly from Saganoseki, and on the miso-based Mokuren nabe hot pot made with Oku-Bungo pork. Breakfast is the Mokuren Japanese breakfast, with free refills of rice and miso soup. Depending on the plan, dinner is served either in the dining area or in your room, and in the Sakura room dinner is always served in-room. For allergies and dietary preferences, call in advance and the ryokan will accommodate them as far as possible. On the room-only plan you can try the local specialty ryukyu-don (marinated raw fish over rice) free of charge; a child-size portion is prepared for elementary school children, but it is not served to children under school age. This room-only plan, along with some of the plans where dinner is served in the dining area, is limited to guests of elementary school age and older.

Baths and Onsen

The onsen is a mildly alkaline simple spring flowing straight from the source. There are 4 private-hire baths on the property, 2 of them open-air baths where you can look up at a sky full of stars. All of the private-hire baths are free of charge, and because they are not reserved in advance, you can bathe whenever one is free. Bathing hours are from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., and from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. the next morning. There is no communal bath, so bathing means having a private-hire bath to your family alone.

Family-Friendly Features

Children's yukata are not provided, so you will need to bring your own. On the accommodation plans listed on Ikyu.com, up to one child may co-sleep, and the child rate for elementary school children is 70% of the adult rate. On those same plans, babies and toddlers cannot be accepted, whether or not meals and bedding are included. The Yuri room is for adults only, so children cannot stay there. Many plans do set child rates.

Access

The ryokan is a 5-minute drive from JR Yufuin Station and about 10 minutes from the Yufuin IC on the Oita Expressway. Kinrin Lake is about a 10-minute walk away, and Bussanji Temple about 3 minutes.
