Kurokawa Onsen Yukyo no Hibiki Yusai is a hot-spring ryokan in the heart of the Kurokawa Onsen hot-spring town. It has nine baths in all (4 communal baths, 3 open-air baths and 2 private-hire baths), and every one of them flows straight from the source. Dinner and breakfast are served buffet-style. Some rooms do not accept co-sleeping children, so families traveling with babies and young children need to check the room type. The private-hire baths need no reservation and have no time limit, which makes them easy to use when bathing with a small child.
Rooms
The 13 guest rooms fall into three groups: special rooms with an open-air bath (2 rooms), Akari Koji (5 rooms) and the main building (6 rooms). The special rooms with an open-air bath, Yamamomiji and Yamazakura, are 38 sq m with two Japanese-style tatami rooms (14 plus 8 tatami mats). One has a hinoki-cypress open-air bath and the other a stone open-air bath. They sleep 2 to 4 guests and have set child rates. The Akari Koji Junior Suite is the largest room at the ryokan, at 80 sq m (a 10-tatami Japanese-style room plus a bedroom). It has 4 beds, sleeps 2 to 7 guests and has set child rates.
The Akari Koji Japanese-Western rooms come in three sizes: 14 tatami mats plus a bedroom (38 sq m) and 12 tatami mats plus a bedroom (35 sq m), each for 2 to 5 guests, and 9 tatami mats plus a bedroom (30 sq m) for 2 to 4 guests. All of them have set child rates. Child rates are also set for the main building Family Deluxe Room (50 sq m, 1 to 5 guests), the main building Japanese-Western room (28 sq m, 2 to 4 guests) and the main building 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami room (2 to 4 guests).
The main building 8-tatami Japanese-style tatami room (with a bed, 15 sq m), on the other hand, cannot accept children at all: not just co-sleeping children, but elementary school children and babies and toddlers too. The main building 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami room (with a bed, 18 sq m) and the main building Akari Koji Western-style room (twin) cannot accept co-sleeping children either.
Dining
Dinner and breakfast are both served at Yuzentei, a buffet hall of about 300 tatami mats. Dinner runs from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (last entry 7 p.m.). It features eight kinds of nigiri sushi, starting with bluefin tuna, and a kushiage (deep-fried skewer) corner where a chef fries the skewers in front of you. All-you-can-drink is included, with alcoholic drinks such as beer and cocktails. The ryokan describes the spread as something adults and children alike can enjoy. Breakfast runs from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. (last entry 9 a.m.), with a menu that includes Kumamoto regional dishes such as gameni (simmered chicken and vegetables), karashi renkon (mustard-stuffed lotus root) and gojiru (soybean soup), plus a bread buffet corner. Because the meals are buffet-style, food allergies are not accommodated individually, but guests with allergies may bring in food and tableware that are safe for them. If you would like to do so, you need to let the ryokan know when booking.
Baths and Onsen
There are nine baths in all: 4 communal baths (indoor baths), 3 open-air baths and 2 private-hire baths, and every one of them flows straight from the source. The spring water is a chloride-sulfate spring and a sodium chloride spring, with benefits for conditions such as muscle pain and neuralgia. Bathing hours are 6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to midnight. The private-hire baths, Sugi no Yu and Nagomi no Yu, need no reservation and have no time limit, so they are easy to use when you want to bathe with a small child without worrying about other guests.
Family-Friendly Features
With the private-hire baths, the special rooms with an open-air bath and the Japanese-style tatami rooms without beds, children can stay with you, co-sleeping included. As noted above, however, some rooms with beds installed do not accept co-sleeping children, or cannot accept children at all, so families traveling with babies and young children need to check the room type. A humidifier is available to borrow. Childcare services are not available.
Access
Public transport is limited, so the ryokan recommends coming by car or rental car. It is about 50 minutes by car from JR Aso Station, or about 50 minutes by the bus bound for Beppu from Aso Station on the JR Hohi Line, followed by a 10-minute walk from the Kurokawa Onsen stop. A shuttle runs between the Kurokawa Onsen bus stop and the ryokan; advance reservation is required. There is parking for 50 cars, free for staying guests.
