The communal bath Matsu-no-yu (Sora and Kaze), renewed in 2024, brings pine into its decor and is finished in granite, with separate baths for men and women. The bath uses heated water rather than onsen water. Some rooms in the main building have an indoor bath, and the Hime room looks out over the sea from its hinoki cypress bath.

Mizuno Ryokan Karatsu is a purely traditional Japanese ryokan at the foot of Karatsu Castle, where every room has an ocean view. From the sukiya-style rooms you look out over Karatsu Bay and its islands, and both dinner and breakfast are kaiseki courses served in your room, featuring seafood from the Genkai Sea and Saga beef. The communal bath, Matsu-no-yu, was renewed in 2024, and some rooms have their own hinoki cypress indoor bath. Welcomed by a samurai-residence gate, this castle-town ryokan is an easy place for a family to slow down.
Mizuno Ryokan Karatsu is a purely traditional Japanese ryokan standing just beside Karatsu Castle in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture. Pass through the samurai-residence gate, which still carries the atmosphere of the Keicho era, and you come to a stone-paved corridor and a waiting area arranged with seasonal flowers, where the calm pace of a castle town takes over. All 8 rooms have ocean views, looking out over Nishi-no-hama beach and Karatsu Bay, with islands including Oshima, Torishima and Takashima, home to Hoto Shrine.
Guest Rooms
Purely traditional Japanese architecture in the sukiya style. The main building's 10-tatami-mat Matsu, Take, Ume and Hime rooms all have an in-room bath, and the Hime room in particular has a hinoki cypress indoor bath looking out over the sea at Karatsu. Each room has its own character: the main building's 20-tatami-mat Shiro and Nishi rooms, the Yuri room (Kanpu-tei), a 20-tatami-mat room in the old wing that is registered as a Tangible Cultural Property, and the main building's 6-tatami-mat Naka-no-ma with its beautiful ajiro (woven bamboo) ceiling. Because every room is a Japanese-style tatami room, families with a baby at the crawling stage can settle onto the tatami with peace of mind.
Baths
The communal bath Matsu-no-yu (Sora and Kaze), renewed in 2024, brings the pine tree - a symbol of Karatsu - into its decor, finished in granite and pine paneling for a calm space. Pine trees stand beyond the windows, and at night the illuminated scenery makes for a dreamlike view. The baths use heated water rather than onsen water and are separated by gender. Some rooms also have an indoor bath, which is handy for families who would rather bathe without worrying about other guests.
Dining
Both dinner and breakfast are served in your room. Dinner is a kaiseki course built around seafood from the Genkai Sea, brought out one dish at a time starting with the small dishes. The Saga beef is Grade 5, and the tableware that frames each dish is mainly Karatsu ware and Arita ware. Spiny lobster, squid, fish and shellfish swim in the large live tanks inside the ryokan, a sign of how much freshness matters here. Being served in your own room, without worrying about other guests around you, is a reassuring point for families with small children.

Step stools for children and baby chairs (chairs for infants) are available to borrow, useful at the washstand and at mealtimes. Bicycles and a desk fluorescent lamp are also available to borrow. The library has a book corner with a sofa to relax on.
