The rooms with an onsen bath fed directly from the source - one each on the 1st, 3rd and 4th floors - have an 8-tatami Japanese-style room, a broad window-side space, a 6-tatami bedroom with 2 beds and an in-room bath fed directly from the source, and can be used by 2 to 5 guests (please call the ryokan for stays of 1 guest or of 5 or more). Standard rooms (a 7.5- to 10-tatami Japanese-style room plus a broad window-side space) take 2 to 4 guests, and annex standard rooms (a 12-tatami Japanese-style room plus a 5-tatami broad window-side space) take 2 to 6 guests, so you can choose according to your group size. Guest rooms have been non-smoking since January 2025.
Dining
Meals are served in three dining areas: Mokuran on the 2nd floor, Suo on the 3rd floor and Oribe on the 4th floor. The kaiseki cuisine makes the most of local ingredients from the Aso area, and both dinner and breakfast are served at counter or table seating that gives each party a sense of privacy. Breakfast starts at 8:15 a.m.
Baths and Onsen
The ryokan has 6 baths. The open-air bath Hoshi no Yu and the semi-open-air bath Tsuki no Yu alternate between men and women each day, and the spring water is a sodium sulfate-chloride spring. Hoshi no Yu is built as three separate tubs that appear stacked one above another, arranged in tiers so guests can take in the mountain scenery; part of it is a standing bath 140 cm deep, so watch your footing. Tsuki no Yu is a semi-open-air bath open along one side, and of its two tubs the nearer one is kept lukewarm so you can warm up gradually. The indoor bath Akane no Yu, reserved for staying guests, is separated by gender and is easy to get into, with few steps from the elevator through to the changing room, the indoor bath and the semi-open-air bath. The family baths Hana (built of hinoki cypress) and Hikari (built of stone) are private-hire baths sized for about two people, and staying guests can use them free of charge 24 hours a day.

Part of the open-air bath Hoshi no Yu is a standing bath 140 cm deep, so take care with your footing when bathing with a small child. The Igozaka service entrance, a shortcut to Kawabata-dori in the center of Kurokawa Onsen, is a fairly steep set of stairs and is not suited to strollers.

Just past the entrance gate there is a footbath, free for staying guests. There is also one table-tennis table and one table-tennis serving machine, free for staying guests from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Access
Kurokawa Onsen is in Manganji, Minamioguni-machi, Aso-gun, Kumamoto, a hot-spring village of 30 ryokan gathered in the mountains. It is about an hour by car from Hita IC on the Oita Expressway. For parking, 12 of the 60 spaces in the Kurokawa Onsen Tourist Ryokan Cooperative's shared parking area are for Nanjoen and are free to use. A shuttle to the Kurokawa Onsen bus stop is by reservation, and you need to let the ryokan know your arrival time by the day before.
