forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 4.55 out of 5 (1,447 reviews). Many guests say they were pleased by the courteous welcome and attentive care from staff right from arrival, and they also rate the kaiseki dinner and breakfast and the sweets buffet highly for their flavor. Some guests, on the other hand, report that the open-air bath felt less open than the photographs had suggested, which is worth keeping in mind when you bathe.

Overview

Beppu Onsen Hotel Shiragiku is a long-established onsen ryokan overlooking a Japanese garden, a 7-minute walk from Beppu Station. Room types range from Japanese-style tatami rooms to Western-style rooms, and the family-friendly Japanese-Western rooms and two-room types sleep 2 to 6 guests, with child rates available. Children age 0 are not counted toward the number of guests and stay free of charge, and children's tableware, chairs and other items are available to borrow. The communal baths alternate between men and women each day and there is no private-hire bath, while breakfast is a buffet with more than 80 items.

Rooms

The ryokan offers a wide range of room types, from Japanese-style tatami rooms to Western-style rooms and Japanese-Western rooms. The two-room type with a Japanese-style tatami room and a bedroom (a 10-tatami main room plus an 8-tatami bedroom, 75 sq m) sleeps 2 to 6 guests and has child rates. The Japanese-Western room (an 8-tatami Japanese-style room plus a Western-style twin, with bath and toilet, 26 sq m) sleeps 2 to 6 guests and is recommended for two- and three-generation stays. On the upper floors, the 10-tatami Japanese-style rooms (45 sq m) sleep 1 to 5 guests, and the basic Japanese-style rooms (37 sq m), the ryokan's standard, can also be chosen. Western-style twin rooms are 26 sq m for 1 to 2 guests. Modern Japanese-style twin rooms (34 sq m) have a shower booth but no bathtub, and fit two beds measuring 120 cm wide by 200 cm long. The special Spa Suite Kikumanyo is 80 sq m and has a natural onsen indoor bath flowing directly from the source; it sleeps 2 to 5 guests, with child rates available. The maisonette-style rooms with a semi-open-air bath are reached by climbing stairs, so families with small children should take care.

Dining

Breakfast is a buffet with more than 80 items, with as much as you like from both Japanese and Western dishes. As a rule, elementary school children are served the same dishes as adults, while preschool-age children receive a kids' meal; if you would like a kids' meal for an elementary school child, please contact the ryokan directly. Dinner is served in the top-floor night-view dining room, and for parties of 8 or fewer there are also plans with in-room dining in your own guest room, so you can enjoy your meal without worrying about other guests. Meals accommodating allergies can also be arranged. Please confirm what can be accommodated in advance.

Baths and Onsen

The spring water is a natural hydrogen carbonate spring. There are 2 communal baths: Kusu Yudono, with an all-hinoki indoor bath and a spacious open-air bath, and Kiku Yudono, with an open-air bath featuring a stone pagoda and a mist-sauna-style onsen bath. The 2 baths alternate between men and women each day. There is no private-hire bath. There is no indoor or outdoor pool either, so if you would like to enjoy the water together with your children somewhere other than the communal baths, you will need to choose the special Spa Suite Kikumanyo with its own indoor bath.
