Kurokawa Onsen Kurokawaso is a hot spring inn set along a mountain stream in Kurokawa Onsen, Minamioguni-machi, Kumamoto. Rooms are mainly Japanese-style tatami rooms, with special rooms and detached annex buildings that have their own open-air bath. Dinner and breakfast are both served in fully private dining rooms. Alongside a communal bath and open-air bath fed straight from the source, there are 3 private-hire family baths available by reservation. Co-sleeping is accepted for children who have not yet started elementary school, but there is no child rate category for elementary school students. Rooms
All rooms in the main building are Japanese-style tatami rooms. The standard 10-tatami room sleeps 2 to 5 guests and is on the second floor; there is no elevator, so you reach it by stairs. There are also special rooms combining twin beds with a tatami area. Main Building Special Room B has twin beds plus a 14-tatami Japanese-style area and an open-air bath, sleeping 2 to 6 guests. Main Building Special Room A has twin beds plus a 12.5-tatami area, with a shower booth and both an indoor bath and an open-air bath fed straight from the source, sleeping 2 to 5 guests. The detached annex buildings on the grounds are built with earthen walls and rented as a whole building each. They come as Japanese-style tatami rooms sleeping 2 to 4 guests and a Western-style room with twin beds sleeping 2 guests, and all of them have both an indoor bath and an open-air bath.
Dining
Dinner and breakfast are both served in fully private dining rooms, so you can enjoy your meal with your children without worrying about other guests. Children of elementary school age and under are served a kids' meal rather than the adults' kaiseki course, while breakfast is the same Japanese breakfast the adults have. If anyone has a food allergy, let the ryokan know in advance; meals accommodating allergies can be arranged.
Baths and Onsen
The ryokan uses Kurokawa Onsen's source water generously, flowing straight from the source. The spring water is a sodium chloride-bicarbonate spring, said to be beneficial for neuralgia, women's ailments and chronic digestive complaints. There are 2 communal baths and 2 open-air baths for staying guests only, and they swap between men and women in the morning and evening. A low-temperature sauna and a cold plunge bath are also provided. Three family baths, each with its own character, can be taken for private-hire use by reservation at the front desk. Staying guests can use one free of charge for 50 minutes at a time, which makes bathing with small children easy without worrying about other guests.

Co-sleeping is available for up to 2 children, from age 0 through children under school age, with a separate facility fee of 2,000 yen before tax. There is no child rate category for elementary school students, in either the upper or lower grades, or for babies and toddlers with meals and bedding; the only rate category provided is for co-sleeping children under school age. Children who co-sleep receive amenities such as a toothbrush, and depending on their age a jinbei (a light two-piece cotton set) or a yukata as well. Bookings that include children are not accepted online, except during the summer holiday period, and must be made by phone. Because the ryokan sits in the mountains, both the main building and the annex have many stairs, and the main building has no elevator, so take care if you are moving around with a stroller.
Access
By car, the ryokan is on National Route 442; note that car navigation systems guide you from Route 442 into the hot spring town. In winter the road surface can freeze, so bring tire chains or other anti-slip equipment. Parking is free for 20 cars and needs no reservation. From the Fukuoka area you can take the direct bus to Kurokawa Onsen, and from the Kumamoto area the Kyushu Odan Bus. A free shuttle to the Kurokawa Onsen bus stop is also available and must be arranged in advance.
