About Us

About this site

Kids Stay is a search site for families traveling with children, covering hotels and ryokan in Japan with the facilities that matter: playrooms, pools, baby food and more.

Booking sites will not let you filter by "has a playroom" or "serves baby food", so finding the right place can take hours. This site was built to solve exactly that problem for parents. We research properties across Japan ourselves and organize them so you can search and compare by more than 40 family-specific criteria.

And if you don't read Japanese, there is a deeper problem: the details that make or break a family trip (whether toddlers in diapers may use the shared baths, the age rules for the pool, whether the buffet caters for babies) are usually published only in Japanese, deep inside official websites. We read those sources in the original and put what actually matters into English.

I'm a Japanese dad in my 30s, and this site is researched and written from Japan, working straight from the Japanese sources, not compiled from other English articles. My wife and I have always loved to travel, so we kept traveling all over Japan after we married, and we carried on once our child arrived. Since then we have stayed at many of these places as a family: Grand Mercure in Nasu, Hoshino Resorts, a private villa on Ishigaki Island, and plenty more besides. Becoming a parent taught me all over again how much a good hotel is worth.

I also write about the thinking behind this service, and what goes on behind the scenes, on Medium.

How we research

Every property page is written from primary sources: the hotel's official website, Japan's major domestic booking sites Rakuten Travel and Jalan (which usually carry far more family detail than international platforms), and the family-friendly certification lists of Miki House Child Research Institute, the research arm of Japan's best-known children's brand. Nearly all of these sources exist only in Japanese; we read them in the original.

Each page shows a last-verified date, and dynamic details such as rates and availability are refreshed regularly from the Rakuten Travel API.
