Ureshino Onsen Wataya Besso is a hot spring ryokan with 102 rooms in Ureshino Onsen, Saga Prefecture, set on extensive grounds that straddle the Ureshino River. Its guest-room wings each have their own design, among them the Tower Building, Kachoen, Onsenkyo, Miyabikan and the detached Suimeiso. Children are welcome to stay: elementary school children can be served a kids' kaiseki course, and children who have not yet started elementary school a one-plate meal. Do note that there is no elevator to the Kachoen, Onsenkyo and Miyabikan areas or to the communal bath, so reaching them means climbing roughly 10 to 20 steps.
Rooms
The ryokan has 102 rooms in all, spread across wings of differing design on grounds that straddle the Ureshino River: the Tower Building, Kachoen, Onsenkyo, Miyabikan and the detached Suimeiso. The standard Japanese-style tatami rooms in the Tower Building are 8 to 10 tatami mats for 1 to 5 guests, with 5 sets of Japanese-style bedding, giving families room to spread out. Sasa in Kachoen is a Japanese-Western room made up of an 8-tatami Japanese-style tatami room and a bedroom, sleeping 1 to 6 guests, with a cypress (hinoki) indoor bath and a rock-built open-air bath. Unzen in Onsenkyo is a two-room suite with a 12-tatami living room and a 12-tatami Japanese-style tatami room; it has a cypress indoor bath and sleeps up to 4 guests. The twin room with a view bath on the top floor of the Tower Building, room 1127, is barrier-free and can accommodate guests staying in a wheelchair. There is no elevator to the Kachoen, Onsenkyo and Miyabikan areas or to the communal bath, so reaching them means climbing roughly 10 to 20 steps. If walking is difficult, or if you are worried about the climb while carrying a small child, the Tower Building rooms, which involve no stairs, are recommended.

Breakfast is either a Japanese-Western buffet in the Kujaku banquet hall or the Ureshino Japanese set meal at the Japanese restaurant Rikyu; the ryokan decides which, and guests cannot choose. Elementary school children can be served a kids' kaiseki course, and children who have not yet started elementary school a one-plate meal. On some plans, dinner can be enjoyed in a private room at Rikyu, which suits families who want to eat with their children without worrying about other guests. If anyone has a food allergy or ingredients they would rather avoid, let the ryokan know the ingredients and the number of guests in advance; requests made on the day may not be accommodated.
Baths and Onsen
The communal bath Mikagedono has indoor baths and saunas separated for men and women, along with Ukiyoburo, an open-air bath built from large boulders stacked within the garden. There are steep stairs at the entrance to the communal bath, so take care when moving around with small children. The private-hire bath is closed for the time being, so families who want to bathe on their own need to choose a room in Kachoen or Onsenkyo with an indoor bath or an open-air bath.
Family-Friendly Features
Children are welcome to stay, and co-sleeping is limited to 2 children. Children ages 0 to 3 can stay co-sleeping without meals, and there are several rate settings depending on age and on whether meals and bedding are included. Breakfast is served in the same form as for adults, so a separate breakfast charge applies even when a child aged 4 or over is booked without meals. Room service is not available.
Access
The ryokan is about 5 minutes by car from Ureshino IC on the Nagasaki Expressway, and about 5 minutes by car from JR Ureshino Onsen Station. Parking is free for overnight guests, with space for 80 cars, and a free shuttle service is available with advance reservation. The rental bicycles for staying guests include children's bikes, such as junior cross bikes and junior road bikes.
