forumWhat families say
Rakuten Travel rating 4.66 out of 5 (2,709 reviews). From a family point of view, guests praise the pool and kids' spaces, saying children can enjoy themselves all day. Families also praise the care shown to those traveling with babies and young children, such as having beds pushed together for co-sleeping with preschool-age children. Some report that the unlimited drinks and light snacks let adults relax too. On the other hand, some guests report seeing hornets in the garden, so care is needed.

Low-bed Japanese-Western room (a room suited to small children)

Overview
Shimabara Onsen Hotel Nampuro is an all-inclusive onsen resort with an open-air bath and private-hire baths looking out over the Ariake Sea, plus a summer-only outdoor pool. Family rooms range from garden-view Japanese-Western rooms to rooms with bunk beds, and the support for families runs deep: a kids' corner, baby food by age in months, kids' meals, a diaper bin and Milton sterilizing solution to borrow. The communal bath even has a small jar bath just for children.
Rooms
In the annex, the garden-view rooms include a 33 sq m Japanese-Western room pairing a Japanese-style tatami area with twin beds, sleeping 2 to 5 guests, with two 120 cm-wide semi-double beds. The main building's ocean-view Japanese-Western rooms also come in a low-bed type, where the beds are kept low so that families with small children can settle in with peace of mind. The 42 sq m Japanese-Western room with bunk beds sleeps up to 7 guests, and the 68 sq m FAMILY Premium Suite with a terrace sleeps up to 10, so both multigenerational trips and larger family groups are covered. Note that some room types have only a shower booth and no bathtub, so if you want to bathe your child in the room, please check the room type when booking.
Dining
Dinner varies by plan and may be a kaiseki course, shabu-shabu (thinly sliced meat cooked in simmering broth) or a barbecue, and elementary school children are served a kids' meal. The dining venue stocks baby food by age in months, for 5, 7, 9 and 12 months, and you may also bring your own baby food and use the microwave in the venue freely. If a child who is breastfeeding has allergies, let the hotel know in advance and a meal prepared with allergy accommodation will be arranged. Breakfast is a buffet in the restaurant, with bread baked fresh every morning.
Baths and Onsen
Guests can enjoy several onsen baths, including an open-air bath overlooking the Ariake Sea, a communal bath, private-hire baths and guest rooms with their own open-air bath. The private-hire baths are by reservation only, and the standard charge is 5,500 yen per session, tax included. The communal bath also has a small jar bath (tsubo-buro) just for children, 60 cm across and 30 cm deep, so even very young children can bathe with peace of mind. The water is around 42°C. As for when a baby can start bathing, the hotel recommends consulting a doctor, while noting that some staff have bathed their own babies from around 3 months old. On days when school trips or sports groups are staying, the communal bath may be reserved for their use or crowded.
