Forks and spoons are provided in every cottage for children who cannot use chopsticks yet. Tableware is also stocked to match each cottage's capacity, so meals with young children are easy to manage.

The indoor bath in each cottage is designed for bathing as a family. The tub in the 6-person cottages is big enough for about three people, a parent and children, to get in together, and the tub in the 10-person cottage is twice that size. Every cottage has a shower, and the baths can be used at any hour of the day.

Kurokawa Mori no Cottage is a whole-cottage rental on high ground a 4-minute drive from Kurokawa Onsen in Minamioguni-machi, Kumamoto, with 9 cottages to choose from. Every cottage has an indoor bath and a kitchen, so families can settle in and cook for themselves or have a barbecue. Several cottages suit families with babies, including traditional Kominka houses with tatami rooms and no beds, and a log house for 10 guests with private rooms. In summer a children's pool is set up in the plaza. There is also a private-hire open-air bath, for time with just your family.
Rooms
There are 9 cottages on the grounds, ranging from a cottage for 2 guests up to the 12-person log house (129 sq m), which can accommodate as many as 20 guests. The 10-person log house has two bunk beds, a single bed and a semi-double bed, along with private rooms with beds. Kominka I, Kominka II and the 12-person log house have no beds; guests lay out the futon bedding themselves. There are four 6-person cottages, three of which have two bunk beds on the second floor, while the remaining one, the 6-person Cottage NEW, has no bunk beds and a wooden-floored bedroom instead.
Dining
No meals are served, so guests cook for themselves, barbecue or eat out. Each cottage is equipped with cooking equipment including a gas stove, microwave, electric kettle and rice cooker, plus a full set of tableware. The 2-person cottage has a 5-go rice cooker, and the other cottages have 1-sho cookers (go and sho are traditional Japanese measures for rice, a sho being the larger of the two). Barbecue sets are available to rent for a fee; charcoal is included, but food ingredients are not.
Baths
All 9 cottages have an indoor bath and a shower, which can be used at any hour of the day. There is also an open-air bath for private hire, bookable at 1,500 yen per hour and available from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Guests staying in Kominka I or Kominka II can use their own dedicated open-air bath, stepped into directly from the indoor bath, as they please throughout their stay. Day-use bathing is not available, as the baths are for staying guests only.
Family-friendly features
The 10-person log house is recommended for families with young children, and its private rooms with beds give everyone some privacy. Kominka I and Kominka II have no beds and include tatami rooms, which makes them popular with families traveling with babies. A swing is set up on the terrace of Kominka I and on the veranda of the 12-person log house, so children can move around and play outdoors. The 6-person Cottage NEW stands on flat ground slightly apart from the other cottages, which suits families with babies and toddlers or older guests who want a quiet stay, though there are about 5 to 7 steps up to the entrance. In summer a children's pool is set up in the central plaza; up to 3 children at a time, through the lower grades of elementary school, can use it under a guardian's supervision. Accommodation plans include children's rates. If you stay with more guests than the cottage's capacity, an additional 1,500 yen is charged per elementary school child.

The address is 6489-5 Manganji, Minamioguni-machi, Aso-gun, Kumamoto. It is about 50 minutes by car from Hita IC toward Kurokawa Onsen, and 4 minutes by car from Kurokawa Onsen toward Senomoto, along the old Oguni Kaido road. Parking for about 20 cars is free and needs no reservation, but as it is a shared space, guests are asked to be considerate of others. There is no shuttle service, and it is about a 20-minute walk from the Kurokawa Onsen highway bus stop.
