Overview

Canal City Fukuoka Washington Hotel is a 422-room hotel on the grounds of Canal City Hakata, one of Kyushu's largest commercial complexes, in Hakata-ku, Fukuoka. It opened in 1996, closed entirely for renovation from April 1 to August 31, 2026, and fully reopened on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. The renovation theme is "a theater of the city," and five motifs - water, canyon, green, sun and star - are woven into the guest-room design. Families can choose the Superior Bunk Fours Room for 4 guests with bunk beds (30.5 sq m) or the Superior Fours Room with four beds (30 sq m), and children of elementary school age and under co-sleep free of charge. The hotel is about a 3-minute walk from Kushida Jinja-mae Station on the subway Nanakuma Line, and a convenience store and a drugstore are 1 minute on foot from the entrance.

This 422-room hotel stands on the grounds of Canal City Hakata, one of Kyushu's largest commercial complexes, in Sumiyoshi, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka. It opened in 1996 and marked its 30th anniversary in April 2026. The entire hotel closed for renovation work from Wednesday, April 1 to Monday, August 31, 2026, and it fully reopened on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

The Renovation Theme: "A Theater of the City"

The renovation takes its theme from the concept of Canal City Hakata, the complex the hotel sits in: "a theater of the city." The five motifs scattered throughout the complex - water, canyon, green, sun and star - are woven into the guest-room design. The lobby's theme is "HAKATA VIBES," a space that expresses the energy of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival and uses wooden materials that evoke the warmth of the Nakasu food stalls.

Rooms for Families

There are 8 room types. The easiest choices for families with children are the Superior Bunk Fours Room, 30.5 sq m with bunk beds (up to 4 guests, themed "sun"), and the Superior Fours Room, with four beds side by side (up to 4 guests, 30 sq m). For three guests, there is also the Superior Triple Room (30.5 sq m, themed "green") and the Standard Triple Room (24 sq m). For the bunk-bed room, the hotel advises against children using the upper bunk for safety reasons, so it is best to plan on an adult taking the upper bed when working out your numbers. A Universal Twin (30.5 sq m) designed for comfortable use by wheelchair users is also available.

Co-Sleeping and Breakfast

Children of elementary school age and under can stay with co-sleeping free of charge. However, amenities such as toothbrushes are provided only for the room's set capacity, and extra beds are not available. If bedding is needed, the child is charged the same rate as an adult. Breakfast is served at Bonjour Plus, the 117-seat restaurant on the first floor, every day from 6:30 to 10 a.m., with last entry at 9:30 a.m. The buffet showcases the food culture of Kyushu and Hakata, and includes dishes such as Goto udon from Nagasaki, counted among Japan's three great udon varieties. Prices are 2,420 yen for adults and 1,540 yen for ages 4 to 11, and free for children under 4 (all prices include tax). If you add breakfast for a co-sleeping child, these prices apply separately.

Staying Inside Canal City Hakata

The hotel is inside the Canal City Hakata complex, so shopping, dining and even a show at the theater are all available without leaving the grounds. A convenience store (Lawson) and a drugstore (Matsumoto Kiyoshi) are 1 minute on foot from the entrance, making it easy to restock diapers, formula and drinks. For staying guests only, the lobby has the Wakuwaku Pass Card, a discount card usable at some shops in Canal City Hakata. The hotel also points to the Fukuoka Anpanman Children's Museum in Mall as a nearby attraction. The Nakasu entertainment district is a 5-minute walk away.

Access and Parking

The hotel is about a 3-minute walk from Exit 1 at the west ticket gate of Kushida Jinja-mae Station on the subway Nanakuma Line, about a 10-minute walk from the Hakata exit of JR Hakata Station, and about a 10-minute walk from Exit 5 of Nakasu-Kawabata Station on the subway. From Fukuoka Airport it is about 15 minutes by taxi, or 5 minutes to Hakata Station on the subway Airport Line. The hotel has no parking of its own; guests use Canal City Parking (capacity 1,300 cars) at the affiliated guest rate of 1,700 yen, valid from 1:30 p.m. to 10:30 a.m. the next day with unlimited entry and exit during that period, or Shisa Parking (capacity 207 cars) at 1,600 yen for 17 hours from entry, with no re-entry. Practical Information for Your Stay

Check-in is at 2 p.m. and checkout is at 11 a.m. Free Wi-Fi is available in all rooms, and guest-room desks also have a wired LAN cable. Since the renovation, self check-in and checkout machines that automate registration cards and payment have been introduced, along with a self-service cloakroom for staying guests, and the elevators require a card key to reach the guest-room floors. There is no communal bath, onsen, private-hire bath, sauna or pool, so guests bathe in their room's bathroom. Room service is not offered. Pets are not allowed. Guests under 18 staying without an adult need a consent form from a person with parental authority. The website is available in English, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) and Korean.
