If driving on snowy roads worries you, narrowing your search to destinations you can reach from a Shinkansen station makes a winter family trip far easier to plan. At Echigo-Yuzawa you step off the bullet train straight into snow country, and around Karuizawa many hotels offer a pickup service from the station, so you can get around without a car. Appi Kogen, Hachimantai, and Shizukuishi are also reachable by bullet train. How you get from the station to the hotel differs from one property to the next. At this age, touching the snow matters far more than sliding down it. Whether you are close enough to go back to the room every time gloves get wet or someone needs the toilet counts for more than how impressive the facilities are. From what age can children enjoy playing in the snow?

Once a child can walk, sledding and building snowmen on hotel grounds or at a snow play ground are within reach. Ski and snowboard schools set their own minimum ages, so please check the information for each ski resort. With an infant, combining snow-view hot spring baths with short spells of snow play is the least demanding way to shape the trip.
I am nervous about driving on snowy roads. Are there areas I can reach without a car?

Echigo-Yuzawa and Karuizawa are close to bullet train stations, and in Hakuba, Kusatsu, and Nasu Kogen there are hotels you can reach from the station or bus terminal by local bus or hotel shuttle (check with each hotel whether a shuttle is offered and whether it must be booked). In Hokkaido, many hotels in Niseko and Tomamu run shuttle buses from the airport, which makes those areas easy to plan without a car.
Can we rent snow gear when we get there?

Most ski resorts and resort hotels offer rentals of snow suits, gloves, boots, and sleds. Children's sizes are limited in number, so it is reassuring to check in advance what is available and whether you can reserve it. Some hotels lend the gear free of charge.
What should we do on a day when snow or wind keeps us indoors?

On a heavy snow day, the realistic move is not to push it and to switch to a day spent inside the hotel. If you have reserved rental snow wear or a sled, asking the hotel or ski resort how unused days are handled and when gear must be returned makes it easier to change plans. In areas with indoor attractions nearby, you can also watch road conditions and narrow your options to destinations with short travel times.
