Hotel Sakurai, known in Kusatsu Onsen as the "yokozuna of the east" (the top rank in sumo), is a 169-room onsen ryokan made up of the Hon-Kyakuden main building and the Shin-Kyakuden new building. Its communal bath, one of the largest in Kusatsu at about 30 meters, draws on 3 hot-spring sources and lets the water flow through without recirculation. Co-sleeping is accepted for up to 2 children, and babies and toddlers can be booked with or without meals and bedding. The communal bath has baby beds for diaper changes and baby baths, and in summer staying guests can use the outdoor pool free of charge.
Rooms
The ryokan has 169 rooms across two buildings, the Hon-Kyakuden and the Shin-Kyakuden, ranging from rooms for 2 guests to rooms that sleep 7. The standard Hon-Kyakuden Japanese-style tatami room with a tsugi-no-ma (adjoining room) is 30 sq m for 2 to 7 guests. It has a tsugi-no-ma or an anteroom that can be partitioned off with fusuma sliding doors, so you can choose one to suit your group size, but the bedding is futon only and the room has a shower booth with no bathtub. The Hon-Kyakuden Hollywood Twin, furnished with Simmons beds, is 20 sq m for 2 guests, with two beds 135 cm wide by 200 cm long side by side. The sixth floor of the Hon-Kyakuden has 12 rooms with an open-air bath, but these open-air baths are not onsen; they use heated water.

Dinner is served from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and breakfast from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., with a buffet as the standard format. The buffet has no children's set meal or kids' meal, so families simply help themselves. On the kaiseki plans, elementary school children are served a children's set meal and preschool-age children ages 3 to 5 receive a kids' meal. Rice porridge can be prepared as baby food for a fee, and baby food you bring yourself can be warmed for you. Allergies are accommodated as far as possible, but advance consultation is essential, and requests made on the day may not be accommodated. Baths and Onsen
The communal bath draws water from the Bandaiko, Sainokawara and Wata-no-yu sources and uses it free-flowing without adding water, in a bathing space about 30 meters long. Bathing hours run from 2 p.m. until 10 a.m. the following morning. The men's and women's baths are not swapped, and bathing is not possible from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., when the baths are cleaned. Baby beds for changing diapers are provided in both the men's and women's changing rooms, and the bathing area has baby baths, baby soap and chairs for babies and older children. Children who are not yet out of diapers are asked to refrain from getting into the tubs, and because the water is hot, parents with any concerns are encouraged to consult their family doctor. Access
A free minibus shuttle runs from the Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal to the hotel. There is no shuttle from JR Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station, so you will need to take the public bus, which takes about 25 minutes and costs 780 yen for adults and 390 yen for children one way. Parking is an outdoor surface lot with 200 spaces and is free for staying guests. From Tokyo or Ueno, the train route is to Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station on the JR Agatsuma Line, followed by a 25-minute bus ride; by car it is about 68 km via the Kan-etsu Expressway.
