Furano is about an hour by car from Asahikawa Airport, with JR Furano Station as the local base. The sights are scattered around the town, so a rental car makes moving around much easier, and during the lavender season, centered on July, roads and parking lots get busy, so it pays to set out early. In winter there is deep snow and ice on the roads, so snow tires are essential if you drive, and ski gear can be rented locally. The town sits at altitude and mornings and evenings are chilly, so pack an extra layer even in summer.
