Best Hotels in Tokyo for Families: Where to Stay by Area, Rooms That Sleep 5

Tokyo has no shortage of hotels, and that is the problem for parents. A tower in Shinjuku, a ryokan by Shinagawa Station and a bayside hotel on the way to Disney look alike in search results, yet they lead to very different days with a stroller. Room size is the other trap, because a room that works for two adults may not fit a family. This guide shows how to narrow down Tokyo family hotels in the order "area, then your child's age, then room size", with named picks for each area, based on information from each hotel's official site and booking sites.

hotelOur pick

A high-rise about 5 minutes from the West Exit of Shinjuku Station by underground passage, with free cribs for babies up to about 10 months, a summer pool for young children and a family room for three to five. A Baby Gokigen Plan is offered for families with children under 3 in some room types.

Choose by area, then age, then room size

Kids Stay lists 133 hotels in Tokyo (as of September 2026). More than 40 of them lend a crib and 10 have a shallow kids' pool. With that much choice, almost every hotel looks "family-friendly", so the order you compare in matters more than any ranking.

Start with the area, because a short walk from the station saves more energy than any in-room amenity. Then look at your child's age, since a baby needs a crib while a six-year-old needs to know whether they still stay free. Last comes room size, which decides whether five people can share one room.

  • Shinjuku for big hotels linked to the stations by underground passages
  • Tokyo Station, Ginza and Nihonbashi for walkable hotels a few minutes from the station, including a five-star stay
  • Shinagawa and Tokyo Bay for station-connected hotels, a kids' pool, and bay hotels on the way to Haneda or Maihama
  • Akasaka and Roppongi for large hotels with a tatami suite, a kids' pool and a Family Suite
  • Western Tokyo for Sanrio character rooms or an onsen night outside the city

Shinjuku hotels for families

Our Shinjuku area list has eight hotels (as of September 2026), from luxury towers to affordable hotels by the station. Prices in this guide are Rakuten Travel rates per adult with two adults sharing one room, as a rough guide as of September 2026. "Preschool" and "under school age" in this guide mean children who have not yet started elementary school (in Japan, up to about age 6).

Rooms that sleep four or five

For a family of five, start with hotels where Kids Stay actually found a price for five people in one room, not just a stated capacity. In this guide, four hotels qualify, shown with the lowest total price we found for five people sharing one room, not a per-adult rate (checked July to August 2026).

  • New Otani Inn Tokyo (Osaki), from about ¥62,000
  • Tokyo Okutama Onsen Okutamaji (Ome), from about ¥111,000
  • Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo (Shinjuku), from about ¥138,000
  • The Prince Park Tower Tokyo (Shiba Koen), from about ¥477,000

For four, the 38.6 sq m Superior Natural Force at Grand Prince Hotel Shin Takanawa (up to four guests), the 80 sq m family room at Hilton Tokyo Odaiba, the 32 sq m family rooms at Shinjuku Washington Hotel and the connecting rooms at New Otani Inn Tokyo are worth a look, but confirm how many guests each room takes when booking. For more options, see our guide to hotels for a family of five.

By your child's age

Under 1

Look for a crib and help with baby food. Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo lends cribs for babies who cannot yet stand and has a plan for children under 3, and Mandarin Oriental Tokyo provides baby food. Our baby food travel guide covers what to bring.

Ages 1 to 2

Toddlers roll, so bed guards and a kids' menu help. Grand Prince Hotel Shin Takanawa, The Prince Park Tower Tokyo and Hilton Tokyo Odaiba lend bed guards, Takanawa Hanakohro has low 40 cm beds, and The Strings Hotel Tokyo InterContinental has a kids' menu and high chairs.

Ages 3 to 5

This is the age for a shallow kids' pool and a playroom. In summer, Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo, Grand Prince Hotel Shin Takanawa and Hotel New Otani Tokyo have kids' pools, and on rainy days Tokyo Bay Shiomi Prince Hotel has a shoes-off playroom. Watch the cutoff, since Hilton Tokyo makes co-sleeping free only up to age 5.

Elementary school

Now the question is whether kids still stay free. Co-sleeping is free through elementary school at The Strings Hotel Tokyo InterContinental and New Otani Inn Tokyo, and up to age 12 at Grand Hyatt Tokyo. For fun, Keio Plaza Hotel Hachioji has Sanrio character rooms.

FAQ

Do children stay free at Tokyo hotels?

Often, but only up to a set age and usually only when sharing an adult's bed. In this guide the free age runs from preschool to age 12, and some hotels allow one child per bed or per adult. Meals are often extra. Our guide to child rates and co-sleeping explains the terms.

Up to what age can kids share our bed?

It depends on the hotel. Hilton Tokyo Odaiba makes it free up to age 5, Mandarin Oriental Tokyo up to 11 and Grand Hyatt Tokyo up to 12. Where no upper age is stated, confirm it when booking.

Can we borrow a crib in Tokyo?

At many hotels, yes. More than 40 Tokyo hotels on Kids Stay lend a crib (as of September 2026), and some, such as Grand Prince Hotel Shin Takanawa, need a reservation. See our travel baby bed guide for backup options.

Tatami room or beds with young kids?

In a tatami room the family usually sleeps close to the floor, so there is little height to fall from. Beds suit families who want a familiar setup, ideally with a bed guard. Options in this guide are Takanawa Hanakohro (Japanese-style rooms with low 40 cm beds), the Garden Suite with a tatami room at The Prince Park Tower Tokyo, and the tatami rooms at Tokyo Okutama Onsen Okutamaji.

Pick your area first, match the hotel to your child's age, then confirm the room fits everyone. Details change, so check the latest information with the hotel before you book.
