Can children who are not yet potty trained get into a hotel's communal bath? What the published information on 1,933 properties in Japan shows

More than eight properties in ten give you no way to tell

Of the 1,933 properties we list, those that state on their official website that a child who is not yet potty trained may get into the tub (a tub set aside for children in diapers, bathing permitted while wearing a swim diaper, wording such as "children in diapers are welcome to bathe too") number 65, or 3.4%. At the other end, 48 properties (2.5%) state that it is not allowed, with wording such as "we ask that children who are not yet potty trained refrain from using the communal bath."

In between them, 216 properties (11.2%) have equipment such as a baby bath, a baby chair, a baby bed or a bath thermometer in the bathhouse or the changing room, which shows that a child can come into the bathhouse with you without going into the tub.

For the remaining 1,641 properties (84.9%) you cannot tell whether it is allowed, even after reading the official website and the booking sites. That group covers not only properties that say nothing at all, but also properties that do say something, yet so vaguely that the question cannot be settled (for example, "families with children welcome" with nothing about the rules in the bathhouse, or a hedged phrase such as "we may ask that very small children refrain"). In this study we counted such vague wording neither as "allowed" nor as "not allowed" and put it in this group. It does not mean that it is not allowed. The Japanese lodging industry has a strong culture of "ring us and we will sort out the details," and many properties have handled these questions one family at a time. For a parent traveling with a baby or a toddler, though, having to make a phone call before pressing the booking button is a real obstacle to planning the trip.

Even among properties with a communal bath, fewer than one in ten state the rule

Among the properties we list, 1,163 could be confirmed to have a large communal bath or a shared bathhouse. Applying the same classification to those 1,163 properties gives the following.

Even when the count is limited to properties that have a communal bath, fewer than one in ten state clearly whether it is allowed. As things stand, properties that have the equipment but do not state the rule outnumber those that say "allowed" by three to one.

Even the properties that say no leave you a way out

Of the 48 properties that state that the communal bath may not be used, 10 have a private bath you can reserve and 15 have guest rooms with their own indoor or open-air bath. A certain number of properties, in other words, are saying "not the communal bath, but the private bath or the bath in your room instead."

Among the 65 properties that state that children may get into the tub, 38 have a private bath as well. Across all the properties we list, 467 (24.2%) have a private bath, which makes it the practical fallback when the rules for the communal bath are unclear.

We looked at pools in the same way. 97 properties state on their official website that a child who is not yet potty trained may use the pool while wearing a swim diaper or similar. (That is a count against all the properties we list, not a share of the properties that have a pool.)

One sentence on the official website sets a property apart from nine out of ten others

What this study shows is that writing a single sentence on the official website about whether children who are not yet potty trained may bathe, and on what terms (a tub set aside for them, a swim diaper, a pointer to the private bath), sets that property apart from more than nine out of ten properties in the same area.

Writing "not allowed" is just as valuable to a parent. If they know before they book, they can choose a property with a private bath or a bath in the room, or reserve that property's private bath. What families most want to avoid is arriving without knowing and being turned away on the spot.

Method

1. Scope. The 1,933 properties across Japan listed on Kids Stay as of August 19, 2026. (Our listing criteria are that the property accepts babies and toddlers, and that facts about traveling with children can be confirmed from published information. This is not a random sample of every property in Japan.)
2. Sources. Each property's official website, together with what is published on its pages on Rakuten Travel, Jalan and Ikyu.com. (For Rakuten Travel property information we also use the official Rakuten Web Service API.) The figures reflect what was published between August 16 and 18, 2026. We review the listing of every property we carry every month.
3. "State on the official website that children may get into the tub." Properties whose official website states that a child who is not yet potty trained may actually get into the water in a large communal bath, a shared hot spring bath, or a private or family bath (a tub or shallow area set aside for children in diapers, bathing permitted while wearing a swim diaper, or an explicit statement that children in diapers may bathe). Properties where only a booking site says so, with nothing on the official website, are not counted. Properties where this holds only for a bath inside a guest room are not counted.
4. "Have equipment so a child can come into the bathhouse." Properties whose official website or booking-site listing states that the bathhouse or the changing room has equipment such as a baby bath, a baby chair, a baby bed or a bath thermometer. Whether the child may get into the tub is not part of this test. (Some properties fall into this group and the group above.)
5. "State that the communal bath may not be used." Properties whose official website or booking-site listing states that children who are not yet potty trained may not use the large communal bath.
6. "Publish nothing that lets you tell whether it is allowed." Properties in none of the groups above. This covers properties that say nothing at all about traveling with children or about the baths, and properties that do mention them but so vaguely that the question cannot be settled (wording where the ages or the conditions cannot be pinned down). It records the answer as unknown; it does not mean that it is not allowed. Wording we found hard to judge was not counted on the explicit side but placed in this group. (This is a conservative count that keeps the explicit groups narrow.)
7. "Properties confirmed to have a communal bath." Properties where the existence of a large communal bath or a shared bathhouse could be confirmed from the official website or a booking-site listing (1,163 properties). Properties where it could not be confirmed are excluded. (That covers both properties with no communal bath and properties that state nothing, where we cannot tell.)
8. How we classified. We classified what each property publishes against the definitions above, and where the wording was hard to judge the site's operator checked the page and made the call. For every classification we record the passage in the original text that supports it, so the totals can be reproduced mechanically from the database. The figures are a snapshot in time, and facilities and rules do change. For an individual property, please go by the latest information on its property page and check with the property before you book.
