What 2,113 family-friendly properties in Japan publish about traveling with a baby, counted across 51 criteria

Among properties with a communal bath, 4.8% state that a child in diapers may get into the tub

The bath is the point of the trip for a family, and the first hurdle for anyone traveling with a baby. We could confirm a large communal bath or a shared bathhouse at 1,292 properties, and among them the ones that state officially that a child who is not yet potty trained may get into the tub number 62, or 4.8%. By contrast, 224 (17.3%) state that the bathhouse has equipment such as a baby bath or a baby chair, and 195 (15.1%) state that there is a baby bed in the changing room. The equipment gets written down, the rule does not. What a parent wants to know is less what is there than whether they are allowed in.

Narrowing the count to ryokan (traditional Japanese inns) shows a way out. Of 548 ryokan, 306 (55.8%) state that they have a private bath (a family bath you reserve for your own use), more than half, and 440 (80.3%) have either a private bath or a bath in the guest room. When the rules for the communal bath cannot be read, whether there is a bath the family can use on its own becomes the practical alternative.

The share of properties with a private bath varies by region. Gunma is high, at 36 of the 53 properties we list there (67.9%), followed by Tochigi at 55.6%, Hyogo at 42.9% and Shizuoka at 42.4%, while Tokyo stands at 4.7% and Okinawa at 2.1%. Behind that lies the way family-friendly options cluster in the hot spring areas. On water quality, 174 ryokan (31.8%) have simple hot spring water, which is mild and low in minerals.

Baby cribs at hotels, baby futons at ryokan

Where the baby sleeps splits by type of property. A baby crib for hire is stated by 332 of 832 hotels (39.9%) and by 191 of 419 resorts (45.6%). Ryokan, by contrast, come to only 38 of 548 (6.9%). What a ryokan lends is not a crib but a baby futon, a baby-size mattress and quilt laid on the floor, and 260 of the 548 (47.4%) state that they lend one. Since 97.3% of ryokan have Japanese-style tatami rooms, the assumption is that the family sleeps side by side on futons laid out on the tatami.

Bed guards, which stop a child rolling off, differ even more than the bedding itself. Against 25.5% of resorts and 17.8% of hotels, ryokan come to 12 of 548 (2.2%). A family sleeping on futons has no need of one, but for a family that chooses a room with beds it bears directly on the safety of a child who has started to roll over.

The type that stands out is whole-property rentals (cottages, villas, glamping and apartments, 130 properties), where only 23 (17.7%) state that they lend bedding for a baby. Much of the wording reads as though you are expected to bring your own, which makes this the type of property where checking before you book matters most.

60.8% of ryokan state that they serve toddler meals, against 23.2% of hotels

Meals are the area where ryokan and hotels differ most. Toddler meals, meant for children who have moved on from baby food, are stated by 333 of 548 ryokan (60.8%) against 193 of 832 hotels (23.2%), and by 745 properties (35.3%) overall. Behind that gap probably lies the way a ryokan serving dinner builds a children's menu into what it sells, while at hotels, where a room-only stay is the norm, there is simply less said about meals at all.

The hurdle one step earlier is baby food, what a younger baby eats while weaning. Properties that state they serve baby food itself are 22% of resorts, 13% of ryokan and 4.9% of hotels, 214 (10.1%) overall. Count in the properties that will warm up baby food you bring, or set aside a portion of the adults' meal, and the figure rises to 416 (19.7%). For a child at the weaning stage, whether the property will warm it up decides how much you pack and how the day runs.

A ryokan's strength shows in where you eat, too. Meals in the room or in a private dining room are stated by 351 ryokan (64.1%), so nobody has to worry about a child making noise. Catering for allergies is stated by 790 properties overall (37.4%), and by 311 ryokan (56.8%).

6.2% of properties state that they have a nursing room, and among ryokan 1.8%

Feeding, formula and diaper changes are the area where properties publish least of all. A nursing room or a place to prepare formula is stated by 131 of the 2,113 properties (6.2%), and by only 10 of 548 ryokan (1.8%). Resorts come to 13.6% and hotels to 7%. You can of course feed the baby in your room, but at a property where the communal bath and the dining room are a long walk from it, having somewhere to stop on the way changes how tired the family is by the end of the stay.

Formula and diapers follow the same pattern. A bin for used diapers is stated by 344 properties (16.3%), and a kettle for making up formula or equipment for sterilizing bottles by 240 (11.4%). Properties that state they have all three, bedding for the baby, the formula equipment and a diaper bin, number 145 (6.9%), rising to 12.9% among resorts. With that much on site, a family can cut down what it carries in one go.

Properties that state nothing at all about items for babies number 472 (22.3%). That is the figure inside a population made up only of properties that present themselves as welcoming to families. Strollers for hire come to 18.4% of resorts and 160 properties (7.6%) overall. Some properties do not have one, but the count is likely to include properties that do have one and have not written it down.

Even among properties with a pool, only 14.6% state whether a child in diapers may use it

Whether there is somewhere to play decides how a rainy day goes. A kids' room is stated by 135 of 419 resorts (32.2%), 94 of 548 ryokan (17.2%) and 58 of 832 hotels (7%), and by 308 properties (14.6%) overall. When the weather turns, somewhere to go outside the room is less a facility than a refuge for a family with small children.

We could confirm a pool at 610 properties, but only 89 (14.6%) state that a child who is not yet potty trained may use it. Whether a swim diaper is enough, or whether there is a separate shallow pool, is not something you can put right once you have arrived. Childcare, or babysitting, is stated by 73 properties overall (3.5%), and by 12 of the 129 properties in Tokyo (9.3%), against 2 of 548 ryokan (0.4%).

Kids programs are stated by 157 resorts (37.5%) and by 377 properties overall (17.8%). The way childcare clusters in city hotels and is almost absent from hot spring ryokan starts to matter when parents are looking for somewhere they can take turns to rest.

English support ranges from 44.4% in Kyoto down to 8% in Yamanashi

For a family traveling from abroad, whether there is guidance in English is the first hurdle. English support is stated by 355 properties overall (16.8%). By prefecture, Kyoto leads at 44.4%, followed by Osaka at 39.7% and Tokyo at 25.6%, while Shizuoka is at 8.2% and Yamanashi at 8%. Even in Okinawa, where we list a great many properties, it is 34 of 233 (14.6%), so an area with plenty of family resorts is not necessarily an area where the English is written down. Whether the rules for babies and toddlers can be checked in English is, in practice, whether the booking happens at all.

The other hurdle is tattoos. Properties that state the communal bath may be used with tattoos number 140 overall (6.6%), or 114 (8.8%) once the count is limited to the 1,292 with a communal bath. By prefecture, Tochigi comes to 22.2% (10 of 45 properties) and Osaka to 12.7%, against 1.6% in Tokyo and 0 of 45 properties in Kyoto (0%). In Kyoto, the prefecture furthest ahead on English, not one property states that tattoos are allowed, and that gap is likely to be a barrier when a family from overseas is choosing a hot spring destination.

Welcome Baby certified properties state far more, on every item

Properties we could confirm as holding the Welcome Baby certification (Mikihouse Kosodate Soken) number 64 of the 2,113 we list. Comparing those 64 with the 2,049 where we could not confirm the certification, the certified properties come out well ahead on every item that bears directly on traveling with a baby.

What needs care here is that this is a correlation and not a cause. Whether the certification led these properties to put their facilities and their wording in order, or whether properties that were already in order went on to apply for it, cannot be told from these figures. In practice the certification reads less as proof of quality than as a marker for properties where the information is likely to be written down.

Whether it is written down is the biggest divide of all

Last, the density of what is published. Per listed property, the median number of criteria for which Kids Stay could confirm an explicit statement was 7. While 665 properties (31.5%) state 10 criteria or more, there are also 284 (13.4%) where fewer than 3 can be read. Even among properties that all welcome children, the amount a parent can read and act on varies enormously.

Vol.1, "Diapers and Communal Baths White Paper 2026", concluded that the barrier for parents is not whether the facilities exist but that the rules are not written down. Counting this time across 51 criteria lands in the same place. A property that adds a single sentence to its official website sets itself apart from many of the properties in the same area. Method

1. Scope. The 2,113 properties across Japan listed on Kids Stay as of September 7, 2026. (Our listing criteria are that the property accepts babies and toddlers, and that facts about traveling with children can be confirmed from published information. This is not a random sample of every property in Japan.)
2. Sources. Each property's official website, together with what is published on its pages on Rakuten Travel, Jalan and Ikyu.com, the major Japanese booking sites. (For Rakuten Travel property information we also use the official Rakuten Web Service API.) Every month we review what is published for every property we list.
3. What the shares mean. Every share in this report is the share of properties that state the fact on their official website or on a booking site. A property that does not state it is not thereby a property that does not offer it. Properties that publish nothing, and properties that do publish something but so vaguely that neither the answer nor the conditions can be pinned down, are both left out of the count on the explicit side. (This is a conservative count that keeps the explicit side narrow.)
4. Criteria and evidence. We classify what each property publishes into 51 criteria. For every classification we record the passage in the original text that supports it, and those evidence records number 16,839. The totals can be reproduced mechanically from the database.
5. Types of property. "Ryokan", "hotel", "resort" and "whole-property rentals" are Kids Stay's own categories (548 ryokan, 832 hotels, 419 resorts, and 130 whole-property rentals, which combine cottages, villas, glamping and apartments). They are not the legal categories used in the lodging industry.
6. By prefecture. Prefecture-level figures cover only prefectures where we list 40 properties or more. The denominator is the number of properties we list in that prefecture, with no restriction by type of property.
7. The communal bath and pool denominators. "1,292 with a communal bath" are the properties where the existence of a large communal bath or a shared bathhouse could be confirmed from the official website or a booking site. "610 with a pool" are, in the same way, the properties where the existence of a pool could be confirmed. Properties where it could not be confirmed are excluded from the denominator. (That covers both properties without the facility and properties that publish nothing, where we cannot tell.)
8. Welcome Baby certification. The 64 properties whose certification by Mikihouse Kosodate Soken could be confirmed from the official website or other published material. The comparison between certified properties and the others shows a correlation, not a causal relationship. Whether obtaining the certification raised how much a property states, or whether properties whose facilities and wording were already in order went on to obtain it, cannot be told from this study.
9. How we classified, and its limits. Where the wording was hard to judge, the site's operator checked the page and made the call. The figures are a snapshot in time, and a property's facilities, rules and wording do change. For an individual property, please go by the latest information on its property page and check with the property before you book.
