Note: Counts such as "more than 500 properties" come from the facility data of hotels listed on Kids Stay (as of October 2026, not the total number of hotels in Japan)
Kids Stay has verified 31 hotels in Hakone; 17 of them have a private-hire onsen bath, 11 of those at no extra charge, and 23 have a bath in the guest room. Only 4 say in writing that a child still in diapers may go into the tub, and 10 let a child share a parent's bed for free.
If you are planning Hakone with a baby or toddler, the hard question is rarely whether a ryokan has a lovely bath. It is whether your child is allowed in it. Shared onsen baths in Japan often ask children in diapers to stay out, so a private bath is often the way a family can soak together. Narrow it down in this order, first whether your child can go in the tub, then which kind of private bath, then the co-sleeping age.

How private onsen works for families in Japan
A private bath in a Hakone ryokan usually comes in one of three forms, and each changes how your evening goes with a small child.
- Free private-hire bath. A bath your family uses alone, in turns with other guests, at no extra charge. Of the 17 Hakone hotels with a private-hire bath, 11 are verified as free. A few are open around the clock, such as the four baths at Hakone Hotel Kagetsuen and the baths at Hakone Yumoto Yaeikan.
- Private-hire bath that may cost extra or need a reservation. The other 6 hotels with a private-hire bath are not verified as free, so treat the fee and the booking method as something to ask about. These are Hotel Okada, Aura Tachibana, Hakone Hotel Kowakien, Yumoto Fujiya Hotel, Hakone Pax Yoshino and Hakone Tenseien.
- A bath in your own room. 23 of the 31 hotels have a bath in some or all guest rooms, from an onsen open-air bath to an indoor bath supplied with onsen water. You bathe whenever the baby is ready, with nobody waiting outside.
Whether a baby in diapers may use a shared bath, and the general etiquette, is covered in our guide to onsen with a baby in diapers. For the question of what age to start, see Can a baby or toddler go in a Japanese onsen? This article stays on the private bath.

Before you book
Three details decide whether the bath works for your family. Ask about each one when you book, or message the ryokan beforehand.
- How the private bath is used. Ask whether it is free, whether you reserve a time or simply use it when it is empty, and the hours. Some baths here run 24 hours, which helps with a baby on an unpredictable schedule.
- What happens with a child in diapers. At Hakone Hotel Kowakien and Hakone Tenseien, the permission covers the private-hire baths, not the communal bath. Everywhere not listed above, ask directly rather than assume.
- The co-sleeping age and who may stay. Free co-sleeping ranges from age 1 at Hakone Yusakaso, to age 2 at Hakone Kowakien Tenyu and Hotel Green Plaza Hakone, to preschool age at Hakone Shiunso. Some properties limit who can stay, such as Kisenso (age 2 and under, or elementary school) and Aura Tachibana, whose open-air-bath rooms in Kaze no Yakata are adults only.
If you are a family of five, note that Kids Stay confirmed a room that sleeps 5 at 24 of the 31 Hakone hotels. More on bigger rooms across Japan is in hotels that sleep a family of five.
FAQ
Can a baby use the private onsen at a Hakone ryokan?
Yes, at some of them, and four Hakone properties confirm it in writing. Hakone Hotel Kowakien opens its private-hire baths from age 0, Hakone Tenseien lets children in diapers use a private-hire bath, and Hakone Yumoto Kisenso and Hotel Green Plaza Hakone allow a child in diapers in the tub. At other ryokan, ask before you book.
Is the private bath free?
At 11 of the 17 Hakone hotels with a private-hire bath, yes. Examples include Hakone Shiunso, Hakone Sengokuhara Mitake and Hakone Hotel Kagetsuen, where four baths are free and open 24 hours. At the other 6, check whether a fee applies.
Can we book a time slot?
It depends on the ryokan, and Kids Stay has not confirmed how time slots work at each one, so ask when you book. Baths open 24 hours, as at Hakone Hotel Kagetsuen and Hakone Yumoto Yaeikan, give you more flexibility. A room with its own bath avoids the question entirely.
Do ryokan in Hakone allow co-sleeping for free?
Yes, 10 of the 31 Hakone hotels let a child share a parent's bed at no charge, but the age limit varies. It is age 1 at Hakone Yusakaso, age 2 at Hakone Kowakien Tenyu, Ryuguden and Hotel Green Plaza Hakone, preschool age at Hakone Shiunso, and through elementary school at HOTEL THE MITSUI HAKONE, which opens on December 15, 2026. How child rates work in Japan is explained in Japan hotel child rates and free co-sleeping.
