Hakone Kowakien Tenyu is a ryokan where every room has its own onsen open-air bath. Standard rooms are 35 sq m, or 45 sq m including the balcony, and sleep up to 4 adults. Rooms
Standard rooms are 35 sq m, or 45 sq m including the balcony, and sleep up to 4 adults. When 4 guests stay, futon bedding or day beds are prepared for 2 of them. Every room has an onsen open-air bath made of Shigaraki ware, and the room has two beds, each 120 cm wide. The room lineup is made up of 66 standard rooms on the ravine side, 54 standard rooms on the outer caldera rim side, 24 top-floor rooms with high ceilings, and 6 special rooms named after places in Hakone.
Dining
Breakfast is a Japanese-Western buffet built around local ingredients, with a wide range of both Japanese and Western dishes served from a lively open kitchen. On plans that include dinner, elementary school children are served the same menu as adults and children under school age are served a kids' menu; elementary school children can also switch to the kids' menu if they prefer. The buffet menu cards label the 8 major allergens - shrimp, crab, wheat, buckwheat, egg, dairy, peanut and walnut - but individual allergy accommodation is not available at dinner. Room service is not available.
Baths and Onsen
There are two communal baths: Kurumazawa no Yu on the 5th floor and Ukigumo no Yu on the 6th floor, which switch between men and women each day during cleaning that starts at midnight. Children aged 7 and over must use the bath for their own gender: boys the men's bath, girls the women's. Children who are not yet out of diapers are asked to refrain from getting into the tubs in the communal baths; they can use the washing area only, or the onsen open-air bath in the room.

Children's rates are set by age: elementary school children ages 7 to 12 pay 80% of the adult rate, and children under school age, ages 3 to 6, pay 60% of the adult rate when meals are included. For a child under school age who co-sleeps without meals, there is a facility fee of 3,000 yen, or 5,500 yen if bedding alone is requested, and children under 3 stay free. When children stay, a child-size yukata and a toothbrush set are provided. Cribs are also available to borrow for the rooms, but numbers are limited, so confirming in advance is recommended.
Access
The nearest bus stop is Tenyu, just steps from the ryokan, served by the Izuhakone Bus and the sightseeing facility loop bus. A free shuttle bus also runs from Gora Station on the Hakone Tozan Railway. By car from the Tokyo direction, it is about 2 hours to Tenyu via Atsugi IC, the Odawara-Atsugi Road and Hakoneguchi IC, then along Route 1. There are 75 parking spaces, free for staying guests.
Play Areas and Pools
The connecting passage on the 1st floor of Tenyu leads to the adjoining Hakone Kowakien Yunessun without getting wet, even on a rainy day. During their stay - the day of arrival and the following day - staying guests can use Yunessun's swimsuit area and Motoyu Mori no Yu free of charge as many times as they like. The kids' pool there, Pony Lagoon, is 30 cm deep and has a 1 m-high slide and a space for parents to keep watch. Swim diapers and swimsuits can be purchased inside Yunessun.
