Overview

Hakone Gora Kiritani is a ryokan where guests can enjoy milky-white sulfur onsen from the Owakudani spring source, flowing directly from the source without recirculation. Its 24 rooms are mainly Japanese-style tatami rooms. The family bath is free of charge and does not require a reservation, while the private-hire open-air bath has child rates for ages 4-12 and ages 0-3. Kids' menus are prepared by age, and the private dining rooms are recommended for families with young children. However, children cannot stay at the Sakura-tei annex under the standard one-night, two-meal plan. There are also many slopes and stairs, so families should take care when choosing a room.

Rooms

The main building and Sakura-tei annex have 24 rooms in total. There are elevators in the main building's reception area and in the dining building, but reaching Sakura-tei and the detached room involves outdoor stairs, with no elevator. The Japanese-modern premium Beni, renovated in December 2024, is a suite-style room with a bedroom where futons are laid on a raised platform, connected to a Japanese-style room. It is also conveniently located near the communal bath. The Fuyo no Ma consists of three connected Japanese-style rooms: a raised platform, a 10-tatami room, and a 3-tatami room, and can accommodate up to 7 guests. The 3-tatami room can also be used as a play area or a place for children to nap. Other options include the Japanese-modern compact rooms renovated in 2023 and Japanese-style rooms with 8 tatami mats plus a broad window-side space. The detached room next to the main building has 16 tatami mats plus a broad window-side space and can accommodate up to 8 guests. Sakura-tei also has Japanese-style rooms with 10 tatami mats plus a broad window-side space, as well as special rooms with their own in-room open-air bath: either a 12-tatami Japanese-style room or a Japanese-Western room with twin beds plus 6 tatami mats. These open-air baths are not fed by the hot spring, but they have a reheating function and are ready to use. Sakura-tei is about a 2-minute walk from the main building, along slopes and stairs. Children cannot stay at Sakura-tei under the standard one-night, two-meal plan.

Dining

Both dinner and breakfast are served in the dining area in the main building; in-room dining is not available. Kids' menus are prepared by age for ages 0-3 and 4-12, with the content determined according to the child's age provided when booking. The regular dining area has chairs and tables throughout and is designed for easy use by everyone from children to older guests. Private dining rooms are also available, with a choice of chairs and tables, Japanese-style seating, or sunken-floor (horigotatsu) seating. They are recommended for families with young children and for anniversary celebrations. The private dining rooms can be booked with a plan that guarantees one, or for an additional charge. For children ages 4 through the sixth grade of elementary school, the only option is 70% of the adult rate with futon bedding and meals. For children ages 0-3, the rate can be selected from 30%-70% of the adult rate depending on whether meals and futon bedding are included. Junior high school students pay the adult rate.

Baths and Onsen

Guests can enjoy milky-white sulfur onsen from the Owakudani spring source, classified as sulfate spring water, flowing directly from the source without recirculation. There are 5 baths across 3 bathing areas, allowing guests to visit multiple baths. The small family bath is free and needs no reservation — guests simply lock the door from the inside while bathing. There is also a private-hire open-air bath available by reservation in 5 time slots per day. It has 2 baths for private use — an indoor bath and an open-air bath. The rates are 1,800 yen for adults, 1,260 yen for ages 4-12, and 900 yen for ages 0-3; each rate is per person. It can be used by 2 or more people. A footbath at the entrance to Yudokoro Hatsune can be enjoyed by both adults and children.

Family-friendly Features

The family bath is free of charge and does not require a reservation, and the private-hire open-air bath also offers child rates for ages 4-12 and ages 0-3, making it easier for families to enjoy onsen privately together. Kids' menus are prepared by age, and the private dining rooms are recommended for families with young children. However, children cannot stay at Sakura-tei under the standard one-night, two-meal plan, so families should confirm whether their room is in the main building or the annex when choosing a room. Reaching Sakura-tei and the detached room involves stairs and slopes, and Sakura-tei has no elevator, so families using a stroller should take particular care. The entire building is nonsmoking. For children ages 0 to 3, a rate category with a futon included but no meal is also available. Futons for infants are provided.

Access

From Gora Station, take the cable car and get off at either Koen-kami Station or Naka-Gora Station, then walk about 5 minutes. At Naka-Gora Station, both doors open at different times, so passengers must get off on the designated side in the direction of travel; it is not possible to cross to the other side after getting off. A shuttle from Gora Station is available from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Reservations are not required, but guests must call the property on the day. Contact by email is not accepted.
