A private-hire open-air bath fed 100% by water flowing straight from the source. Each group has it to themselves, so you can bathe with your children without worrying about other guests. The spring water is gentle enough for babies and young children, and is said to pose no problem as long as you avoid soaking longer than you would in the bath at home. Hakone Yumoto Kisenso is a small 12-room ryokan an 8-minute walk from Hakone-Yumoto Station, with onsen water that flows 100% straight from the source. The only children who can stay are elementary school children and infants aged 2 and under, who co-sleep, and the wooden old wing is not accepting children who have not yet started elementary school. Meals are served in private dining rooms, and the private-hire open-air bath can be used free of charge once per group. It is a home-like ryokan run by the owner, a professional baritone singer, together with the okami (the ryokan's proprietress), and the sodium chloride onsen water is said to be fine even for babies as long as you avoid a long soak.
Rooms
There are 12 guest rooms in all, split between the old wing, which keeps its retro character, and the Japanese-modern new wing. Because the old wing is a wooden building, it is not accepting children who have not yet started elementary school, and the ryokan's only room with an open-air bath is also in the old wing, so children under school age cannot use that room either. In the new wing, Karukaya, Rindo, Yamabuki and Yugao are Western-style twin rooms with two beds measuring 97 cm wide, 196 cm long and 47 cm high, and child rates are set for them. The Japanese-style tatami room along the Sukumogawa River has 10 tatami mats with a bath and toilet and sleeps 2 to 5 guests; child rates are set for it as well, and it is roomy enough for families with children or for groups of friends traveling together. The entire ryokan has been non-smoking since March 2022.
Dining
Dinner and breakfast are both served in the semi-private dining area, renovated in 2024. At present all guests dine in the private dining rooms and can make the most of that private space, so even families with young children can relax without worrying about other guests. Dinner begins at 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m., and if you will arrive after 5 p.m. you need to get in touch. Food allergies can currently be accommodated only for guests who are pregnant; for other guests, accommodating food allergies or dislikes is difficult at the moment.
Baths and Onsen
The spring water is a sodium chloride spring, and both the indoor baths and the private-hire open-air bath are fed straight from the source, with no heating and no added water. The water is gentle enough for babies and young children, and is said to pose no problem as long as you avoid soaking longer than you would in the bath at home. The private-hire open-air bath Risen is offered to groups in the order they arrive, for 30 minutes per group, free of charge. There is only one room with an open-air bath, the only such room at the ryokan.
Family-Friendly Points
The children who may stay are limited to elementary school children and infants aged 2 and under, who may only co-sleep. Co-sleeping is for up to one child, and elementary school children are charged 80% of the adult rate. Babies and toddlers staying without meals or bedding are 3,300 yen, and if the infant's details were not entered at the time of booking, a facility use fee of 3,300 yen per person including tax is payable on site. Little is provided in the way of items for young children beyond bath towels, so guests are asked to bring whatever they need.
Access
The ryokan is an 8-minute walk from Hakone-Yumoto Station. There is free parking for 5 cars, but reservations are required. A paid shuttle bus from Hakone-Yumoto Station stops in front of the entrance, costing 100 yen and taking 3 minutes. A Seven-Eleven and a Lawson are a 5- to 6-minute walk away.
