Where to Stay in Japan with Kids: Choose Your Base by Age and Area

Note: Counts such as "more than 500 properties" come from the facility data of hotels listed on Kids Stay (as of September 2026, not the total number of hotels in Japan)

When planning a trip to Japan with kids, most parents start by looking up sights. Halfway through, they discover the hotel has no room for four or five people, or that the trip now involves three different hotels and dragging luggage around every day. A family trip is much easier if you flip the order. Choose the area first, then think about your child's age, and finally check the room size. Once your base is settled, the itinerary tends to fall into place on its own.

Kids Stay lists more than 2,100 family-friendly places to stay in Japan, and we check conditions such as baby cots, free co-sleeping for children and tatami rooms one by one against each hotel's official website or its Rakuten Travel page (one of Japan's largest booking sites). This article is a starting point. It puts Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Okinawa, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Nagoya side by side and looks at them by age, season and transport. We picked representative hotels for six of the areas, point you to a dedicated article for Nagoya, and link each area to its detailed city guide.

After years of traveling with my daughter, I've learned that how close the hotel is to the station matters more to the whole family's mood than how packed the sightseeing schedule is.

Hotels where co-sleeping kids stay free

Start with hotels that don't charge for children sharing a parent's bed, and the budget for the whole trip gets easier to plan.

Choose the area, then the age, then the room

  • Tokyo. Most of the hotels in this article are connected to a station or a few minutes' walk away, so it is an easy first trip to Japan with kids.
  • Osaka and Awaji Island. You can choose between high-rise city hotels and whole seaside villas, which suits families who want both shopping and time in the water.
  • Kyoto. Apartment-style rooms near the station and whole rental machiya (traditional townhouses) suit families who want to cook for themselves and stay several nights.
  • Okinawa. It feels like a resort all year round. Central Naha works without a car, but around the Churaumi Aquarium in the north you should plan transport first.
  • Hokkaido. Lavender fields in summer, snow and skiing in winter, with choices in central Sapporo and right next to the Furano ski area.
  • Kyushu. Fukuoka is the gateway to Kyushu, and in Yanagawa you can stay at a traditional ryotei inn inside a historic garden.
  • Nagoya. How to plan family sights and hotels there is covered separately in Nagoya with Kids.

When your child is under 2, the less you move the easier it is, so we recommend staying in one area for the whole trip. Once your child is in preschool or elementary school and has more stamina, consider combining two areas.

Tokyo, where staying next to the station saves effort

In Tokyo, choose a hotel connected to the station or a few minutes' walk away, so you never have to push the stroller far. For area listings see Tokyo Station, Ginza and Nihonbashi and Shinagawa, Odaiba and Roppongi, and for a full comparison read the Tokyo family hotels guide.

Choosing by your child's age

Under 1

First check whether baby cots and baby gear can be borrowed. Fukugi Terrace has Welcome Baby certification and a full range of items to lend, and Mandarin Oriental Tokyo provides baby food. For where to go, start with Where to take a baby under 1 in Japan.

Ages 1 to 2

At this age meals need separate preparation, so a room with a kitchen is the easiest. Glanz Kei Kyoto Station has a kitchen and washing machine, and Mibu Dodan Momiji can arrange meals for small children.

Ages 3 to 5

Kids have more energy and start wanting to play in water and snow. Conrad Osaka has an indoor heated pool, Yukureba Maejima Hotel has a heated kids' pool on the rooftop, and in winter you can choose Chalet Fuyuri Furano, a 1-minute walk from the slopes.

Elementary school age

You can plan more hands-on experiences. Awaji Seaside Resort in Sumoto is a 2-minute walk from the beach, with a garden for barbecues and camping, while Yanagawa Tachibana Residence Ohana offers kids' activities and pairs well with a canal boat ride.

Frequently asked questions

How do Japanese hotels charge for children?

Every hotel calculates it differently, and the same hotel may vary by plan. Many of the hotels in this article state that co-sleeping children stay free but meals are charged separately, meaning there is no charge for the stay but you pay for food. For details, see How Japanese hotels charge for children.

Up to what age do co-sleeping children stay free?

The age limit varies widely. Among the hotels in this article, AC Hotel Tokyo Ginza and Chalet Fuyuri Furano cover preschoolers, The Strings by InterContinental Tokyo covers children up to elementary school age, Mandarin Oriental Tokyo covers ages 11 and under, and Conrad Osaka covers ages 17 and under. Check the limit per room or per adult at the same time.

How do I borrow a baby cot?

At hotels that lend baby cots, we recommend confirming when you book. In this article, The Strings by InterContinental Tokyo and InterContinental Sapporo lend them free of charge, and Glanz Kei Kyoto Station and Fukugi Terrace also have them. For more, see Do Japanese hotels have baby cots?

Tatami room or beds, which is better?

If your child is small and you worry about them rolling off the bed, sleeping on futons laid on a tatami floor is more reassuring. If you'd rather have beds, look for a hotel that lends bed guards, such as Fukugi Terrace. For the differences between the two, see Hotel or onsen ryokan with kids in Japan?

Before planning the itinerary, settle where you will stay. Once the area is chosen and you have checked the age conditions and room size for your kids, you can fill in the sights at your child's own pace.
