Mibu Doudan Momiji offers whole-house rentals of Kyoto machiya townhouses in Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto. You can choose between two houses, Doudan and Momiji, each sleeping 2 to 6 guests. Both have a Kiso hinoki cypress bath and a kitchen, and because you take the entire house, your family has it to yourselves. Up to 2 children aged 12 and under stay free of charge and may co-sleep, but no children's bedding or sleepwear is provided, and check-in must be completed at the reception counter in front of Kyoto Station.
Rooms
Both Doudan and Momiji are Kyoto machiya townhouses rented out one whole house at a time. Doudan is 87 sq m and Momiji is 92 sq m, and each sleeps 2 to 6 guests. The first floor has a Japanese-style tatami room, a kitchen and the bathroom, and the second floor has a bedroom and a Japanese-style tatami room. The bedroom has twin single beds, and futon bedding is prepared for parties of 3 or more. Adding bedding beyond the number of guests booked costs an extra 2,200 yen including tax, and no children's bedding or sleepwear is provided, so it is worth bringing your own if you need it. Doudan has 3 toilets and Momiji has 2, and each house has 1 bath. A front-loading drum washer-dryer and a full set of kitchen equipment are also provided. The entire house is non-smoking.

The standard plan is room-only, with no meals included. Catered breakfast and dinner can be arranged as an option, and kids' meals are available as well: at Okamoto Kobaian you can choose a one-tier or two-tier meal, with the two-tier including chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard), and at Tagoto you can choose Child A or Child B. All of these require advance reservation, and allergies and preferences can be discussed. The bakery breakfast from hinami, however, does not generally accommodate allergies. A meal charge is added only when elementary school children use a plan that includes meals. The staircase up to the second floor is steep, so take care going up and down with small children.
Access
The nearest station is Saiin Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Line, about a 6-minute walk from the south ticket gate. On the day of your stay, rather than heading straight to the house, you first need to stop at the reception counter inside Kyoto Avanti at the Hachijoguchi exit of Kyoto Station; entry to the house begins at 3 p.m. If you can reach the reception counter by noon, your luggage can also be delivered to the house for 1,000 yen per piece. Parking is free of charge and reserved for staying guests.
