Bettei Ishinoya Izukogen is a 7-room inn in Izu Kogen, Ito, Shizuoka, where every room has its own open-air bath and pets are welcome. The rooms, furnished with antiques imported directly from Britain, are split between the main building and the annex. There is no communal bath and no private-hire onsen, so all bathing happens in your room's indoor bath and private open-air bath. Children can stay from age 0, and a kids' meal is available for ages 2 and over. Dinner can be taken either in the dining room or in your room, and breakfast is delivered to your room.
Rooms
There are 7 rooms in all, 3 in the main building and 4 in the annex, and all 7 have an open-air bath. The main building's 3 rooms, each different from the others, are on the second floor of the front-desk building, reached by stairs. Bedding is two semi-double beds. Room 1 sleeps 1 to 2 guests (30 sq m), Room 2 sleeps 2 to 3 guests (36 sq m, the largest room in the main building), and Room 3 sleeps 1 to 2 guests (33 sq m). The annex has 2 rooms on the first floor and 2 more on the second floor, up a sloped staircase. Annex Rooms 5 and 7 are both on the first floor with the parking area right outside, so you can park and step straight into your room. Room 7 is about 43 sq m, and for stays of 3 or more guests futon bedding can be laid out in the tatami area. Room 8 is also about 43 sq m, and with futon bedding laid in the tatami corner it can sleep up to 4 guests.
Dining
Dinner comes in two forms, in the dining room or in your room, and the combination differs depending on the plan. Dinner starts at 6 p.m., and breakfast is delivered at 8:30 a.m. as room service, with hot sandwiches made from freshly baked bread, egg dishes and meat dishes packed into a basket. For children there is a kids' meal for ages 2 and over; baby food is not provided. From elementary school age, children are generally treated the same as adults in both meal content and price, though if a child in the lower grades is judged unsuited to the course menu, you can ask about switching to the kids' meal. If you are traveling with a baby, the inn will help warm baby food you have brought with you and lend you tableware.
Baths and Onsen
The open-air baths in the rooms are onsen, fed underground from a spring source about 300 meters away; the roughly 50°C source water is diluted with added water and recirculated. The water is a smooth, tasteless and odorless simple onsen. The open-air baths have no roof, and you can bathe at any time. There is no communal bath and no private-hire onsen, so all bathing takes place in your room's indoor bath and private open-air bath.

Children can stay from age 0, and some items are available to borrow according to a child's age in months or years, so you can inquire about what you need. The main building's rooms are up a flight of stairs on the second floor, and the annex's second-floor rooms are reached by a sloped staircase, so moving around with a stroller involves going up and down. Because the buildings are wooden, in keeping with the British antique concept, Annex Rooms 6 and 8 are not fully soundproofed against the floor below, and guests staying with lively children or with a medium-sized or larger dog are asked to be mindful of footsteps.
Access
By car it is about 90 minutes from the Ishibashi Interchange on the Odawara-Atsugi Road or the Numazu Interchange on the Tomei Expressway; by train it is about 5 minutes by taxi from Izu-Kogen Station on the Izukyu Line. There is no shuttle service. Car navigation systems sometimes direct drivers to a different nearby property by mistake, so checking a map app before you arrive is recommended. Parking is free, with one space for each guest room, and no reservation is needed.
