Guests also praise the six onsen baths, including the private-hire baths, where they rarely ran into other guests and could take their time, as well as the attentive staff. The clear Yoshina River runs through the grounds of about 36,000 tsubo, and you can stroll around Tofuya Garden. On Kodakarayama, within the grounds, there is a scenic spot called Fujimidaira with views of Mount Fuji, but reaching it means climbing a gentle hiking trail about a 40-minute walk one way from the entrance building, which is a long way for families with small children. Sneakers can be borrowed free of charge at the entrance building. In the garden, you can eat bread bought to go from Bakery & Table.

Tofuya Resort & Spa-Izu is a Japanese-style resort in Yoshina Onsen, Izu, where guest rooms, dining areas and onsen baths are spread across grounds of about 36,000 tsubo (a traditional Japanese unit of area). Every detached Villa Suite has an onsen open-air bath, the Main Building and West Building have Japanese-style tatami rooms and Japanese-Western rooms with a semi-open-air onsen bath, and every guest room with a bath uses Yoshina Onsen water. With two free private-hire open-air baths, families with small children who find a communal bath difficult can still enjoy the onsen on their own. Note, however, that bookings that include children under school age are not accepted online and must be made by phone.
Rooms
There are 30 guest rooms, spread across the detached villas, the West Building and the Main Building. Every one of the detached Villa Suites has an onsen open-air bath. The Villa Suite Japanese-Western rooms are 72 sq m (an 8-tatami-mat room plus a living room, a bedroom and a terrace) and sleep up to 4 guests. The maisonette Western-style rooms (riverside) have 39 sq m on the first floor and 33 sq m on the second. The twin-bed type is for 1 to 2 guests, while the twin-plus-double type sleeps up to 4, with a double bed (160 cm wide) on the first floor and two single beds on the second. In the Villa Suite maisonette Western-style rooms, parties of 3 or 4 sleep in bedrooms split between the two floors; with 4 guests, two people share the first-floor double bed, and no extra bed can be added. In the West Building, Japanese-Western Room A with a semi-open-air onsen bath is 72 sq m, with a 12.5-tatami-mat main room plus a bed and living area by the riverside window, and Japanese-Western Room B is 69 sq m. In the Main Building, the Japanese-style tatami room with a semi-open-air onsen bath (riverside) is 67 sq m with futon bedding. It has a 12.5-tatami-mat main room and a 7.5-tatami-mat antechamber, where sunken-floor (horigotatsu) seating is set up in winter, and it is the only room at Tofuya without a bed. The Japanese-style twin room with a semi-open-air onsen bath (riverside) is 54 sq m; for 3 or more guests, futon bedding is used. The Main Building maisonette Kura no Ma is 90 sq m (41 sq m on the first floor plus 49 sq m on the second), and its bedroom can be set up with 2 to 4 beds for 2 to 4 guests. The building and all guest rooms are non-smoking, and the entire grounds, outdoor areas included, are non-smoking too.
Dining
Dinner and breakfast are both served in the dining areas, and in-room dining is not available. For dinner you can choose a kaiseki course or a shabu-shabu course (for 2 or more guests), and for breakfast a Japanese or a Western breakfast. With an advance reservation, you can also swap breakfast for brunch at Bakery & Table Tofuya, the bakery cafe on the grounds. Meals are sometimes served in two seatings, so your preferred time may not be available. Meals for children under school age are available at 3,960 yen for dinner and 2,200 yen for breakfast. For food allergies, the resort says it will accommodate the 8 specified allergenic ingredients as far as possible, and advance consultation is required. Baths and Onsen
The spring water is an alkaline simple onsen, colorless and clear with a soft feel on the skin. Free-flowing and recirculated water are used together, and the water is heated, diluted with water and chlorinated (the open-air bath Gyoki no Yu and the private-hire Kodakara no Yu are not diluted). The communal baths consist of two open-air baths that alternate between men and women, plus one indoor bath each for men and women. The open-air baths and the indoor baths are in separate buildings, some distance apart. The two private-hire open-air baths, Kodakara no Yu and Tomo no Yu, are both free of charge and booked in 50-minute slots starting on the hour, normally once per night. Reservations are taken at check-in. Kodakara no Yu is a covered private-hire open-air bath roomy enough for about 2 to 4 people, with two washing stations. Tomo no Yu is a private-hire semi-open-air bath for 1 to 2 people, with only one washing station. Children who are not yet out of diapers are not allowed in the communal baths. Whether they may use the private-hire baths is not listed in our information, so please check in advance. Family-Friendly Notes
Stays that include children under school age cannot be booked online and must be arranged by phone. The online plans show "co-sleeping not available" and "babies and toddlers cannot be accepted, whether or not meals and bedding are included," but these are the acceptance categories for online booking only and do not mean you cannot stay with children under school age. Rakuten Travel's property information also states that bookings accompanied by children under school age are accepted only by direct phone call, so if you would like to stay with a baby, toddler or other child under school age, please call the ryokan to discuss it. Elementary school children, in both the lower and upper grades, pay 70% of the adult rate. The special kaiseki plan (the upgraded special cuisine plan) does not accept children of elementary school age and under. No information is published about cribs or baby futons. A humidifier is provided as room equipment. Colored yukata and samue (a two-piece Japanese work outfit) are available to borrow free of charge at the entrance building. Games such as Othello, playing cards and UNO are available to borrow, as are a thermometer and nail clippers. On the first floor of the guest lounge Taishokan Hosen, coffee, a variety of teas and soft drinks are free from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and the lounge can be used even before check-in. Many parts of the property are hard to make barrier-free, with lots of steps and stairs and many areas without an elevator, so take care when getting around with a stroller. Calling ahead with any questions is recommended.
Access
Take the bus for 20 minutes from Shuzenji Station on the Izuhakone Railway and get off at Yoshina Onsenguchi. Contact the ryokan once you reach the bus stop, and a shuttle will pick you up for the roughly 3-minute ride. The free shuttle bus from Shuzenji Station runs by reservation only, and no runs operate without a reservation. By car, it is about 45 minutes (38 km) from Numazu IC on the Tomei Expressway. Parking for 154 cars is outdoors and uncovered, free of charge, with no reservation needed. Check-in is from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and checkout is at 11 a.m.; eligible plans booked on the resort's own website come with a late checkout at 12 p.m. A bathing tax of 150 yen per adult is payable on site. The clear Yoshina River runs through the grounds, and you can stroll around Tofuya Garden. In a typical year, fireflies can be seen on the grounds in mid-June, and from mid-May to early July a shuttle also runs to a nearby firefly-viewing spot about 10 minutes away by car.
