Shimoda Yamadaya is a hot-spring ryokan on a hillside in Shimoda, Shizuoka, with 24 ocean-view rooms. The garden open-air bath and communal bath, both looking down over Shimoda Port, are fed by a simple onsen, and there is also a free private-hire family bath. Up to 2 children can co-sleep, and children who have not yet started elementary school are served their own meals and given children's tableware, yukata and slippers. An outdoor pool is open in summer, and a free shuttle runs from Izukyu-Shimoda Station, making the ryokan easy to use on a trip with young children.
Rooms
All 24 rooms have ocean views and come with a bathroom and a washlet toilet. Alongside the standard 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms, there are several room types to suit different family sizes. The Bedroom + 8-Tatami Japanese-Style Room pairs an 8-tatami Japanese-style room with one Simmons semi-double bed and one single bed. There is also a two-room Japanese-style layout of 14 tatami mats with an antechamber, the Japanese Bed Twin 10-Tatami for 2 guests, which places beds in a tatami room, and the Bedroom 10-Tatami, which has two Simmons single beds in a tatami room. When the Bedroom 10-Tatami is used by 3 guests, one extra set of futon bedding is added. The whole building is non-smoking, and smoking is possible only in the smoking room set up outside.
