forumWhat families say
Rakuten Travel rating 4.51 out of 5 (1,783 reviews). Guests praise being able to go straight from their room to the sea and the pool in their swimwear, and note that the pool is shallow with a gentle slide, so small children can play with peace of mind. Some also mention the convenient layout that lets you take a warm shower after changing. On the other hand, guests point out that there are a lot of mosquitoes in summer and that you cannot stay in the open-air bath for long.

Overview
Shimoda Yamatokan is an onsen ryokan in Izu Shimoda where every room looks out over Tatado Beach. The beach is a 1-minute walk from the ryokan's shore entrance, and 22 rooms come with their own open-air bath. Families with babies and young children are welcome, with baby-item rentals, a playroom, a Kids Box for ages 1 to 3 and baby rice porridge. Please note that reaching the communal bath and the private-hire baths involves going up and down stairs.
Rooms
All 60 rooms have ocean views. Choices range from the standard 8-tatami Japanese-style tatami room (30 sq m, for 1 to 3 guests) to a 10-tatami plus 6-tatami room with an antechamber (60 sq m), so you can choose according to room size and the number of guests. There is also a 10-tatami plus 7.5-tatami room (60 sq m) with low beds, for families who want tatami rooms but prefer to sleep in a bed. A connecting room can be joined with the standard Japanese-style tatami room next door, sleeping up to 8 guests across the two rooms, which suits three-generation trips. Twenty-two rooms have an open-air bath, and among the three barrier-free Western-style rooms, Room 304 has an open-air bath fitted with a bathing lift.
Dining
Meals are the traditional iso kaiseki (a seafood kaiseki course), and every plan's menu includes kinmedai (splendid alfonsino), a Shimoda specialty. Dinner-and-breakfast sets are available for elementary school children and for children of around kindergarten age. For small children aged 1 to 3 there is a Kids Box (2,750 yen) ordered separately, and for babies who have started on baby food there is baby rice porridge (440 yen). Baby food may also be brought in, limited to commercially sold products such as retort pouches and jars. Food allergies can be accommodated with notice at least 3 days in advance: crustaceans such as shrimp and crab, buckwheat and peanuts can be removed. If a guest is allergic to dairy, wheat, egg or nuts, a dedicated allergy-conscious iso kaiseki course is prepared regardless of the meal plan booked. However, if a wheat allergy is severe enough that even the trace amounts in seasonings cannot be eaten, the ryokan cannot accommodate it. Sesame, soy, kombu dashi, carbohydrates and starches such as wheat, and other special ingredients cannot be accommodated.
Baths and Onsen
The in-room baths, the hot water at the washbasins and the communal bath all use onsen water, and because it is a simple onsen, children can bathe from over 3 months of age. The communal bath, open-air bath and private-hire open-air bath are on the 5th floor and the B1 floor, and as there is no elevator, guests need to use the stairs. Children may bathe with a guardian in the bath for the opposite gender up to age 6; from age 7 they use the bath for their own gender. There are also the reservation-only private-hire baths Spa Villa (PINE, 3,850 yen for one 50-minute session; BAMBOO, 2,750 yen for one 50-minute session), so a family can soak together without going to the communal bath.
