Traveling with a baby between 0 and 2 is exciting and daunting in equal measure. What about baby food? Will there be a crib? Can we take the baby into the communal bath? The questions pile up fast.

The single most important thing when choosing a hotel with a baby is how well it is stocked with baby gear. If the property lends diaper pails, cribs, baby baths and bottle-prep kettles, you can pack a fraction of what you would otherwise carry. Properties certified as a "Welcome Baby" hotel, a Japanese certification awarded by the Miki House Child Research Institute, have been checked specifically for how well they look after families with babies, safety included.

Meals matter just as much. Hotels that serve baby food matched to your child's age in months, or that let you bring your own and warm it up, take the biggest worry off the table.

For bathing, look for a private-hire or family bath. You can take your time with the baby, with no need to worry about other guests. A room with its own open-air bath is more relaxing still.

Choosing a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn, rather than a hotel changes where your baby sleeps first of all. With futons laid out on the tatami floor of a Japanese-style room, there is no bed to roll off, and your baby can sleep between the two of you. Among the properties listed on Kids Stay, more than 1,200 have a Japanese-style room and more than 440 lend baby futons, with more than 390 offering both. If a property has Western-style bedrooms only, more than 190 have rooms with low beds close to the floor and more than 290 lend bed guards, so those are useful things to look for.

Meals and bathing are easier to manage at a ryokan too, because there is always a way out. More than 440 properties serve dinner in your room and more than 480 have private dining rooms, for a combined total of more than 710 with one or the other. Being able to step away the moment your baby fusses makes dinner far easier during the weaning months. More than 190 properties prepare baby food matched to your child's age in months. For bathing, more than 470 have a private-hire bath and more than 190 keep a baby bed in the changing area, which counts for a lot when you are getting a baby dressed on your own.

For a baby under 1, most properties charge nothing at all if the baby shares your bedding and takes no meal or futon of their own. Some, though, collect only actual costs such as a facility fee or the local hot spring tax, and the handling differs from property to property.
