Overview
Hakone Nampuso is a Japanese-style ryokan in the Taki-dori onsen district of Hakone Yumoto Onsen. The main building has rooms with their own onsen open-air bath and the annex has Japanese-Western rooms. There is a generous range of gear to borrow, including a baby bath, a Bumbo baby seat and baby futon bedding. The communal baths and open-air baths draw on an alkaline simple onsen, and children who are not yet out of diapers are asked to refrain from entering the bathtubs. A dedicated dinner menu is prepared for children under school age, so the ryokan works well as a base for family sightseeing in Hakone.
Rooms
The main building has 13 Japanese-style tatami rooms and 49 rooms with an onsen open-air bath, and the annex has 50 Japanese-Western rooms. A standard tatami room has a 10-tatami main room plus a hiroen (a wide window-side sitting area), while a Japanese-Western room pairs an 8-tatami tatami area with a 12 sq m Western-style room. In the annex, the Western-style area is furnished with two single beds and up to four sets of futon bedding can be laid out in the 8-tatami area, which suits families and groups. Among the rooms with an onsen open-air bath, the Wa-Modern Luxury type has a bedroom fitted with Japanese-style twin beds, made by combining futon bedding with mattresses about 20 cm high, so you can line the beds up and co-sleep with your child. All guest rooms are non-smoking, and free Wi-Fi is available.

Dinner is normally served in the dining hall, and some plans let you choose in-room dining or a private dining room instead. Dinner for children in elementary school is essentially the same as the adult menu, but with a request in advance it can be changed to the Mousugu Otona-sama menu, which brings together Hamburg steak, spaghetti, fried dishes and chawanmushi savory egg custard. Children who have not yet started elementary school and are booked with meals are served the Kids Plate, a mainly Western-style plate with hash brown potatoes, spaghetti and Hamburg steak. Breakfast is a buffet with a wide variety of Japanese, Western and Chinese dishes. The tearoom corner inside the ryokan needs no reservation and serves light meals such as Soshu beef curry and beef stew for a separate charge; the curry is only mildly spiced, so children can eat it easily. The ryokan does not accommodate allergies, vegetarian meals, or religious or cultural dietary restrictions.

Access

Driving from the Tokyo direction, go via the Tomei Atsugi Interchange to the end of the Odawara-Atsugi Road, then take National Route 1 from the Odawara-Nishi Interchange and continue straight toward Yumoto. Parking has 100 spaces with no charge for overnight guests; cars are packed in closely, so drive up to the entrance and follow the attendant's directions.
