forumWhat families say
Rakuten Travel rating 3.86 out of 5 (220 reviews). Guests praise the source-fed water as so smooth that they wanted to soak again and again. There is a table-tennis table, and some guests say parents and children enjoyed it together. Guests also found the food delicious, with portions that were just right. On the other hand, some note that the building has a Showa-era feel and shows its age, and that guests who dislike the smell of sulfur should be aware of it.

Overview
Ashinoyu Onsen Kinokuniya is a 25-room ryokan in Ashinoyu Onsen, Hakone, with two kinds of onsen: a weakly alkaline sulfur spring that wells up naturally on the grounds, and a sodium bicarbonate spring from Yunohanazawa. The communal bath, Yukoden, does not close at night, and the two private-hire baths, the Edo-style Shotoku and the semi-open-air Kotan, cost 2,000 yen per 30-minute session. Child rates are available: elementary school children pay 80% of the adult rate, and even co-sleeping children under school age who use neither meals nor futon bedding are charged 2,000 yen per child. The meals served at the child rate are different from the adult meals. Allergy requests are not accommodated, and no baby-item rentals are published, so families with babies and young children should check with the ryokan in advance.
Rooms
The ryokan has 25 rooms in total, all non-smoking. The main building and the annex are linked by a connecting corridor. Kisshotei rooms are Japanese-style tatami rooms with a toilet but no bath, and they have no air conditioning. Shunkanro rooms in the main building are Japanese-style tatami rooms with a bath and toilet, designed to feel bright and spacious. Both Kisshotei and Shunkanro take 1 to 5 guests and have child rates. The annex also has regular Yusenkan rooms, but as of October 2026 the rooms on sale through the ryokan's direct booking and Rakuten Travel are the main building's Shunkanro and Kisshotei rooms and the detached rooms with an open-air bath.
There are two detached rooms, Hibitei and Miyamatei, one of each. Both come with an open-air bath of naturally welling sulfur spring water, an indoor bath and a terrace. Hibitei is a Japanese-style tatami room with a tatami double bed; it takes 1 to 4 guests and has child rates. Depending on the number of guests, futons may be laid out in Hibitei's main room. Miyamatei has a main room of 8 tatami mats and a second room of 10 tatami mats, plus a lounge, and is sold through the ryokan's direct booking. On room-only plans, the futons are already laid out. No information is published about crib or baby futon rentals, so if you are traveling with a baby or young child, please check in advance.
Dining
Dinner is a Japanese kaiseki (traditional multi-course) meal built around seasonal ingredients, and breakfast is a Japanese breakfast. Dinner is served at 6 p.m. only, and after that time dinner may not be available. Breakfast is at 8 a.m. On plans for main-building rooms, both dinner and breakfast are served in the Hozo no Ma dining room. Plans for the Yusenkan annex are said to include an in-room dining option, but as of October 2026 no Yusenkan plans are on sale through either the ryokan's direct booking or Rakuten Travel. On the plans for the detached rooms with an open-air bath, guests are served the same kaiseki meal as in the regular rooms, in the large banquet hall.
The meals served at the child rate differ from the adult meals, and if you want your child to have the same meal as adults, you need to book them as an adult. The kitchen does not change or remove specific ingredients for allergies or religious dietary restrictions. If your child has a food allergy, you will need to check and judge the food's safety yourself.
Baths and Onsen
There are two kinds of onsen: a weakly alkaline sulfur spring that wells up naturally on the ryokan's grounds, and a sodium bicarbonate spring pumped from Yunohanazawa. The communal bath, Yukoden, uses the sulfur spring in its indoor bath and the bicarbonate spring in its outdoor bath. It does not close at night, so you can bathe at any time from arrival until 10 a.m. the next day. The women's bath has a tsuboyu (a pot-shaped tub) of bicarbonate water, and the men's bath has a tsuboyu kept at the source's natural temperature.
The two private-hire baths are the Edo-style Shotoku and the semi-open-air Kotan. Each costs 2,000 yen per 30-minute session, reservations are taken at check-in, and the last session is at 10:30 p.m. Depending on how many guests want to use them, your preferred time may not be available. Some plans include free use of the private-hire baths. In the detached room Hibitei, you can enjoy the naturally welling sulfur spring in your room's own open-air bath.
Family-Friendly Features
Child rates are available, and the meals served at the child rate are different from the adult meals. Based on Rakuten Travel rates (as of October 2026), elementary school children pay 80% of the adult rate. Children under school age pay 60% of the adult rate with meals and futon bedding, or 6,000 yen per child with meals only or futon bedding only. Even co-sleeping children under school age who use neither meals nor futon bedding are charged 2,000 yen per child, so co-sleeping is not free.
The bath options include a family bath: families can use the private-hire baths Shotoku and Kotan. Whether children who are not yet out of diapers can get into the tubs of the communal bath is not stated, so please check in advance. Kisshotei rooms have no air conditioning, so take care choosing your room type if you are staying with children in the hot season. Table tennis is available in the building.
