forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 3.83 out of 5 (231 reviews). Guests praise both dinner and breakfast as generous meals made with plenty of vegetables, and some reviews mention that families could take their time in the onsen thanks to the private-hire baths. On the other hand, several guests felt the building was old and not thoroughly cleaned, so families who put a priority on cleanliness should take note.

Overview

Hakone Elegance is a small onsen inn with 11 rooms, overlooking Lake Ashi. Its sulfur spring onsen is offered in one view bath and two indoor onsen baths, and all of them are private-hire, so your family can bathe on its own without worrying about other guests. For families of up to 4, there is the Triple Extra Room, with three single beds plus an extra bed. On plans that include dinner, children of elementary school age and under are served a Hamburg steak plate. Meals are served in the restaurant only, and in-room dining is not available.

Rooms

There are 11 rooms, all non-smoking. The room that sleeps up to 4 is the Triple Extra Room (Room 103), which has three single beds plus an extra bed and takes 2 to 4 guests. It opens onto a private balcony with views of Lake Ashi and the Hakone mountains. For 3 guests, the Semi-Double + Extra Room (Room 203) has two semi-double beds plus an extra bed and sleeps 3. The other room types are the Twin Room with two single beds (2 guests) and the Hollywood Twin Room with two semi-double beds (2 guests). There are also the King Double Room with a king bed, the Double Room with one double bed, and the Queen Room with a queen bed, each for 1 to 2 guests. The Double Rooms (Rooms 101 and 102) are close to the indoor private-hire bath and the vending machines. The King Double Room, the Triple Extra Room and some other rooms have a washroom and a combined bath-and-toilet unit. The twin rooms renovated in November 2015 have an air purifier and a refrigerator.

Dining

Meals are served in the restaurant only, and in-room dining is not available. Both breakfast and dinner are taken in the dining room. On plans that include dinner, children of elementary school age and under are served a Hamburg steak plate. If you would like your child to have the same meal as the adults, you pay the difference from the adult rate on site. Dinner is from 6:30 p.m. and breakfast from 8 a.m., and on plans that include dinner, everyone starts dinner at the same time. Breakfast is a Western-style plate with a salad of Hakone Seiroku vegetables (grown in the western foothills of Hakone), fruit and sausages, served with freshly baked bread. Allergy-conscious dishes are said to be possible, but please confirm with the inn before booking what can be accommodated. Celebration cakes and similar items can be prepared to suit your budget, with an inquiry required at least 4 days before your stay.

Baths and Onsen

The onsen is a natural sulfur spring with a pH of 3.7, flowing straight from the source. There is one view bath and two indoor onsen baths, and all of them are private-hire, so your family can bathe on its own without worrying about other guests. Reservations are not accepted: check the vacancy indicator on each floor and use a bath if it is free. All the private-hire onsen baths are free to use during your stay. Because the water is strong, guests are advised not to soak for a long time at once but to take several short baths instead. One of the indoor baths may be closed for various reasons. The in-room bathtubs are not onsen. Whether children who are not yet out of diapers can use the onsen is not stated, so please check with the inn in advance. A bathing tax of 150 yen per person is charged separately.

Family-Friendly Features

On the inn's booking screen, children are divided into ages 6 to 12, ages 3 to 5 and under 3, and whether meals and bedding are included is chosen plan by plan. On the main one-night, two-meal plans, children under 3 fall into the category with no meals and no bedding. Child rate amounts are not listed in our information, so please confirm them when booking. Whether cribs or baby futons are available is not stated, so please ask the inn in advance. Children's dinner is a Hamburg steak plate, and because every onsen bath is private-hire, you can bathe with young children without worrying about other guests.
