Senpokaku, in Toba in the Ise-Shima region, is a ryokan that has been made over with families raising children in mind. Babies can use both natural hot spring baths - the panoramic communal bath and the garden open-air bath - and a private-hire bath with a sauna can be reserved. There are rental items such as cribs and portable bassinets, a kids' playroom and a forest tree athletic course, plus an outdoor pool in summer. Dinner can be taken in a private or semi-private room, and you may bring your own baby food and have it warmed.
Rooms
Guest rooms range widely, from Japanese-style tatami rooms looking out over Toba Bay to a 100 sq m suite with a semi-open-air bath, a junior suite with a shower, and themed rooms supervised by the Toba Aquarium. The suite is a single unit of three rooms - a Japanese-style tatami room, a Western-style room and a living room - sleeping 4 to 6 guests with futon bedding or 4 guests with beds. Its open-air bath is big enough for 2 adults and 2 children, and the room is arranged with small children in mind: beds and sofas are set low, and outlets are placed high. The themed room Rakko Blue takes 1 to 4 guests and can add up to 2 futons, but Rakko Green does not have space for a crib or additional futons. Baby chairs and children's beds are available to borrow for any room, and wheelchairs can be borrowed as well. Each room has an electric kettle or hot-water pot for preparing hot water for formula.
Dining
Dinner is served at the Shiosai dining room, a kaiseki course showcasing seafood from Toba. For children there is a curry rice set, along with menu items such as a fried set with dishes like fried prawns. Cutlery for sharing portions can also be prepared, and plain white rice for younger children who have not yet started elementary school is free of charge. Bibs and children's scissors are available to borrow. The dining room has children's chairs in different heights, as well as table seating you can pull a stroller up to (there are some steps in places), plus raised-platform seating, sofa seating, and semi-private and private rooms to choose from. You may bring your own baby food and have it warmed in the microwaves at the front desk and in the dining room. If anyone has an allergy, let the ryokan know at least 3 days in advance and they will prepare dishes with as much of the allergen removed as possible. Breakfast is buffet-style, with French toast baked to order at the live kitchen, along with rice porridge, unsweetened yogurt and steamed vegetables that even young children can eat.
Baths and Onsen
There are two onsen baths: the top-floor panoramic communal bath overlooking Toba Bay, and the garden open-air bath on the mountain side; the spring water is an alkaline simple spring. Children, babies included, may use the panoramic communal bath and the open-air bath, and both the men's and women's panoramic communal baths have a baby bed (the garden open-air bath does not). The reservation-only private-hire bath with a sauna takes up to 6 people, and a baby chair and baby bath are provided in the bathing area. Children of elementary school age and under are asked to refrain from using the sauna. The private-hire bath uses heated fresh water, not onsen water. The open-air and semi-open-air baths in the guest rooms are not onsen either. In rooms with an open-air bath - the special Japanese-Western rooms, Japanese-style tatami rooms, Western-style rooms and others - the tub holds 1 person, while the suite's semi-open-air bath is big enough for 2 adults and 2 children.
