forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 4.12 out of 5 (186 reviews). Many guests praise the delicious food and the attentive service from the staff, including staff from overseas, and describe it as a quiet place to take your time. One family review mentions that their daughters seemed to love it too. Points to note are that the walk up to the ryokan is a steep slope, and that there are almost no restaurants nearby.

Overview

Hatago Kintoen is a 17-room ryokan in Hakone Yumoto Onsen, where you can soak in alkaline simple onsen water from its own spring, Kin no Yu, served straight from the source. Rooms are Japanese-style tatami rooms and Japanese-Western rooms. The Japanese Twin, with two beds set in an 8-tatami plus 6-tatami room, sleeps up to 4 guests when futon bedding is added. On the top floor there are 2 private-hire open-air baths, available for a fee and by reservation. Child rates are available, but children aged 12 and under cannot stay in the Japanese Twin with Open-Air Bath on the top floor. On plans with meals, dinner and breakfast are served in the dining area.

Rooms

The ryokan has 17 rooms in total, made up of Japanese-style tatami rooms and Japanese-Western rooms. The standard Japanese-style room of 8 tatami mats plus a broad window-side space (no bath) sleeps up to 3 guests; it has no bath of its own, so guests use the communal bath or the private-hire open-air baths. A room with the same layout is also available on a lower floor (2nd floor), without a view. The Japanese Twin 8+6 (no view) is a Japanese-Western room with two Simmons beds (W1000 x L1950 mm, 100 cm wide) set in an 8-tatami plus 6-tatami space, and with the two beds and 2 sets of futon bedding it sleeps up to 4 guests. It comes in a type with a toilet and in an Onsen Japanese Twin type with a bath and toilet. The Japanese-style room with an open-air bath fed straight from the source sleeps up to 3 guests and lets you bathe in an onsen open-air bath in your room; the open-air bath is open on one side only, facing the mountain. The Japanese Twin with Open-Air Bath on the top floor (a 26 sq m Japanese-style room) does not accept children aged 12 and under, so it is not an option for families with children. Every in-room indoor bath is supplied with onsen water. There is no dedicated room attendant, and guests lay out their own futons whenever they like, so you can lie down as soon as you arrive. Co-sleeping charges, the limit on the number of co-sleeping children, and whether cribs or baby futons are provided are not listed in our information, so please confirm before booking.

Dining

On plans with meals, dinner is a Japanese kaiseki (multi-course) meal that changes monthly and breakfast is a Japanese breakfast set, both served in the dining area. In-room dining is not available. There is no published information on kids' menus, children's chairs or allergy accommodation, so please ask if you need them. On the Kintoen Standard Room-Only Plan, you can order the Japanese breakfast set for the next morning if you do so by 5 p.m., though seating is limited and it may not be available.

Baths and Onsen

The ryokan's own spring, Kin no Yu, is an alkaline simple onsen, and both the communal bath and its open-air bath are served straight from the source. The communal bath has an open-air bath and an indoor bath, one each for men and women. On the top floor there are 2 private-hire open-air baths, Sora and Ten, looking out over the Hakone Yumoto Onsen area. They are available from 3 p.m. to midnight and from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., cost 2,200 yen per 45-minute session, and must be reserved at check-in. Only the private-hire baths use recirculated, filtered water. If your family wants to bathe together, these paid private-hire open-air baths are the option to consider. Whether children who are not yet out of diapers may get into the communal bath tubs is not stated, so please confirm. A bathing tax of 150 yen per person is charged separately.

Family-Friendly Features

Child rates are available. The rate breakdown by age is not listed in our information, so please confirm when booking. On some plans, children who have not yet started elementary school can be booked in a "meals only", "futon only" or "facility use only" category, and choosing one of these means amenities such as yukata and towels are not included. If you need them, pay a separate charge or book a one-night, two-meal stay. When staying with children aged 12 and under, choose a room other than the top-floor Japanese Twin with Open-Air Bath: the 8-tatami room with a broad window-side space, the Japanese Twin 8+6, the Onsen Japanese Twin 8+6, or the Japanese-style room with an open-air bath fed straight from the source. There is no information on a playroom or on baby items to borrow. The entire property is non-smoking.
