Ashiwada Hotel

Set in Nagahama on Lake Kawaguchi, this 40-room onsen ryokan lets guests enjoy the quiet of the lakeshore. It is about 10 minutes by car from Kawaguchiko Station, and about 3 km, or 15 minutes, from Kawaguchiko IC on the Chuo Expressway. A free shuttle bus - a 9-seat Hiace van - runs between Kawaguchiko Station and the hotel, heading to the hotel at 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. and back to the station at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., with advance reservation required, so the hotel is easy to reach without a car. The communal baths and the hall were renovated in Heisei 29 (2017), the East Wing third-floor rooms in March 2025 and the East Wing second-floor rooms in March 2026 - three straight years of updates inside the building.

Communal baths and a wine bath that carry the bounty of Mount Fuji

The communal baths, open from 3 p.m. to midnight and again from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m., have two indoor tubs, a reclining bath, an open-air bath, a sauna and a jacuzzi on both the men's and women's sides; the men's sauna is a dry sauna and the women's a mist sauna. Their signature feature is the wine bath, an original red-wine bath created by a local liquor shop from powdered grape seeds and skins. In the post-bath lounge, grape juice, a Yamanashi specialty, and barley tea are served free of charge. The spring water is a natural onsen from the Fujikawaguchiko Onsen-kyo hot spring village, diluted with water and heated. From the open-air reclining bath looking down over Lake Kawaguchi, you can bathe under a sky full of stars at night and watch the sun rise over the lake in the morning. A bathing tax of 150 yen is charged separately for adults, meaning junior high school students and older; elementary school children and younger pay no bathing tax.

A private-hire bath for staying guests only

There is also a private-hire bath that looks out on the mountains on the side away from the lake, available from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 3,300 yen per 45 minutes and limited to staying guests. Families and parents with young children can use it in privacy. The tub is a compact size for 2 to 3 people.

40 varied guest rooms (East Wing, West Wing and Special Room)

The rooms comprise 13 Japanese-style tatami rooms, 18 Japanese-Western rooms and 9 Western rooms (3 twins, 2 doubles and 4 singles). Lake-side rooms look out over Lake Kawaguchi, while mountain-side rooms face the mountains as they change through the seasons. 【East Wing 2nd floor, Japanese-Western modern, 10 tatami (lake side, renovated in March 2026)】 pairs two beds with a raised tatami platform that also suits families with children; it sleeps 4, and there are 7 such rooms. 【East Wing 3rd floor, Japanese-Western modern (renovated in March 2025)】 has high-grade fittings such as ReFa shower heads, Simmons semi-double beds and futon quilts filled with 93% white mother duck down. 【Special Room】 has two rooms of 12.5 and 10 tatami plus a 6-tatami wood-floored bedroom, sleeps 9 and comes with a private garden; there is only one of them. 【Jr Suite】 pairs a 12.5-tatami Japanese-style room with a bedroom, sleeps 7, and there are 2. 【Japanese-style 10 tatami + 10 tatami】 sleeps 8, with 1 room, and is popular with family groups. 【West Wing Japanese-style 12.5 tatami】 sleeps 5, with 9 rooms. 【West Wing with antechamber】 is 12.5 tatami plus 4.5 tatami, with 2 rooms. There are also 【Western twin】, 【Western single】, 【East Wing Japanese-modern 14 tatami in retro style】 and 【East Wing double】 rooms. All rooms are non-smoking and have Wi-Fi, a bathtub or shower booth (East Wing rooms have a shower booth only), an empty refrigerator and a toilet with a bidet function. Amenities are generous as well, including bath towels, yukata, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, body soap and a hair dryer.

Playroom and children's items

Beside the lobby lounge is a playroom where small children can play, open from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and stocked with plenty of toys and stuffed animals. Children's yukata and jinbei (90 cm to 130 cm, about 100 of them) are lent free of charge, and children can pick their own in the playroom after check-in; from 140 cm up, adult yukata are lent at the front desk. Children's amenities are provided in the guest rooms. A table tennis corner (3 p.m. to midnight and 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., free of charge) is also open to guests throughout their stay.

Dining and hotel facilities

Dinner, served from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the restaurant overlooking Lake Kawaguchi, can be chosen from a range of courses: a 12-dish Japanese kaiseki course, a Koshu beef kaiseki course (quality grade 4.5, grilled on a Mount Fuji lava plate) and an all-you-can-eat shabu-shabu course, among others. The all-you-can-eat course is popular with families. Breakfast, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. with the restaurant closing at 9 a.m., is a Japanese-Western buffet. A la carte extras - such as Koshu horse sashimi, 100 g for two at 3,300 yen; Koshu beef steak, 100 g at 5,500 yen; and whole Ise spiny lobster sashimi at 6,600 yen each - must be reserved by 5 p.m. three days in advance. Whole anniversary cakes can also be arranged with a reservation by 5 p.m. the day before. Inside the hotel there is the tea room Kochuan (with tea utensils available to rent), rental bicycles (500 yen per bicycle, 3 available on a first-come basis), a karaoke room (2,200 yen per hour), the table tennis corner, the 180-tatami Hall Fuji, a coin laundry (200 yen per hour) and a front desk staffed 24 hours. Check-in is from 3 p.m. to midnight and checkout is at 10 a.m. Meals accommodating allergies can also be arranged.
