When you look for a hotel with a pool in Kansai (the region around Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe), it's easy to wonder, "Is the pool only open in summer?" and "Can my child swim if they're not potty trained yet?" Many outdoor garden pools are open only in summer, so a fall or winter trip can mean a closed pool. Rules on swim diapers also differ from hotel to hotel, and some families find this out only after booking. The quickest way to narrow down Kansai hotels with kids is to check two things first: whether the pool is open year-round or only in summer, and whether children in diapers are allowed in.
Hotels with an indoor pool that is open all year include Spaworld Hotel & Resort, Kobe Arima Onsen Motoyu Ryusenkaku, Shirahama Coganoi Resort & Spa, Yumekaiyu Awajishima, Hotel Okura Kobe, and Kobe Portopia Hotel. Spaworld has both a kids' pool and water slides, and Ryusenkaku has a 4 m x 10 m heated indoor pool that guests can use as often as they like during their stay. The pools at Coganoi and Yumekaiyu are free for hotel guests. The indoor pool at Hotel Okura Kobe is for ages 4 and up, and Kobe Portopia Hotel has no children's pool, so neither suits very young kids.
For outdoor pools in summer, family-friendly choices include Hotel New Awaji and Grand Mercure Awaji Island on Awaji Island, Shiraraso Grand Hotel and Yanagiya in Nanki-Shirahama, and Biwako Hotel on Lake Biwa. Of the Kansai hotels we list, 19 have a pool that kids in diapers can use, and 6 have a water slide.
None of the Kansai hotels we list yet offers a private pool that your family can reserve for itself. For that kind of stay, see our private pool collection, which focuses mainly on Okinawa.

Hotels With Indoor Pools Open Year-Round, Even in Winter
Year-round indoor pools can be found in Osaka, Kobe, and Arima Onsen, as well as in Nanki-Shirahama and on Awaji Island. Weather and season don't matter, so you can plan on swimming even during spring break or a winter trip.

Osaka
Spaworld Hotel & Resort has a year-round pool with a kids' pool and water slides. Children not yet out of diapers can swim in a swimsuit worn over waterproof swim diapers.

Kobe
Hotel Okura Kobe and Kobe Portopia Hotel both have year-round indoor pools, but neither has a children's pool. For little ones, an outdoor pool in summer is a better fit.

Arima Onsen
Motoyu Ryusenkaku has a heated indoor pool with adjusted water temperature, open all year. The water is fairly shallow, and kids in diapers can swim in swim diapers.
Summer-Only Outdoor Pools Are Common on Awaji Island and in Nanki-Shirahama
Seaside resorts mostly offer summer-only outdoor pools, often included in the room rate. They are open for just a few months of the summer, so choose based on your travel dates.

Awaji Island
Grand Mercure Awaji Island has a shallow section about 30 cm deep. Awakan has a kids' pool about 50 cm deep and an inflatable pool for toddlers.

Nanki-Shirahama
Shiraraso Grand Hotel and Yanagiya are open from July 1 to September 30 in 2026, and both are free for hotel guests.
Choosing a Pool Where Kids in Diapers Can Swim
Of the Kansai hotels we list, 19 have a pool that children who are not out of diapers can use. At most of them, kids wear a swimsuit over swim diapers, and some hotels do not allow regular diapers or swim pants alone.

Lake Biwa
Biwako Hotel lets kids use the summer garden pool in swim diapers and a swimsuit, and Grand Mercure Biwako also allows swim diapers.

Arima Onsen
The summer garden pool at Arima Grand Hotel has a small separate pool for children who are wearing diapers.

Nanki-Shirahama
At Coganoi and Shiraraso, babies can swim in a swimsuit worn over swim pants. Hotel Seamore allows swim diapers combined with a swimsuit.
Hotels With Water Slides for Playing All Day
6 of the Kansai hotels we list have a water slide. Height and weight limits, extra fees, and open seasons differ by hotel, so choose according to your children's ages and the time of year.

Osaka
The slide in the indoor pool at Spaworld costs extra on top of the admission fee, and it has height and weight limits.

Hyogo
Nesta Resort Kobe has 6 kinds of slides. The 3 in the indoor kids' pool require a height of 102 cm or more.

Nanki-Shirahama
The Elephant Pool at Yanagiya has an elephant-shaped slide, open in summer only (July 1 to September 30).

Kashihara, Tenri & Ikoma
Nara Plaza Hotel (attached to Nara Kenko Land, a Japanese spa and leisure complex) has a seasonal indoor leisure pool with slides and a shallow "kids' area." Use of the pool costs extra.
Lake Biwa: Spend the Summer at a Lakeside Garden Pool
Hotels on the shore of Lake Biwa are built for enjoying an outdoor summer pool with a view of the lake. The shallow areas are separate, which makes them a good fit for little ones.

Lake Biwa
Biwako Hotel has a pool divided into depths of 0.6 m and 1.2 m. Lake Biwa Otsu Prince Hotel has a pool about 90 m long with a separate children's pool that is 30 cm deep.
Awaji Island: Compare Shallow Pools and Pools With Slides
Awaji Island has hotels with summer outdoor pools, but also ones with year-round indoor pools or pools with slides. Which hotel works best depends on when you travel.

Awaji Island
Yumekaiyu has a shallow, heated indoor pool that is free for guests and open all year. Hotel New Awaji has a pool with a shallow slide for small children.
Tips for traveling with kids
- checkMany outdoor pools are open in summer only, so check first that your travel dates fall within the open season. That way you avoid arriving to find the pool closed.
- checkMost hotels ask kids in diapers to wear a swimsuit over swim diapers, and some do not allow regular diapers or swim pants alone. Bring extra swimsuits for changes, just in case.
- checkEven among year-round indoor pools, the rules differ: Hotel Okura Kobe is for ages 4 and up, and Kobe Portopia Hotel has no children's pool. If you are traveling with a baby, check the age rules first.
- checkHeight and weight limits and extra fees for slides differ by hotel. The slides in the indoor kids' pool at Nesta Resort Kobe require a height of 102 cm or more.
- checkThe summer sun is strong, so a hat and a rash guard help prevent sunburn and also keep kids from getting chilled after they leave the water. Our packing column has tips on choosing swim diapers.
