forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating: 4.75 out of 5 (7 reviews). Families report that the kura storehouse-style rooms have a four-level layout including a semi-basement, which their children enjoyed. Several also say the tableware and rice cooker make longer stays easy, that BBQ is available, and that a supermarket, convenience stores and a family restaurant nearby mean meals are never a problem. Some do note that walking from the station with a suitcase is a bit of a chore.

Overview

Kuranoyado Matsuya Kawaguchiko is a set of rental villas and cottages built in the style of traditional kura storehouses, in the Funatsu area by Lake Kawaguchi. Each of the 5 buildings has its own distinctive kura design, and every one comes with a Shigaraki-ware open-air bath for private use (late March to late December) as well as an en-suite bathroom. With a spacious living room under a high open ceiling and a kitchen equipped with an induction cooktop, microwave and rice cooker, families can bring their own ingredients and cook for themselves or have a BBQ. It is about a 15-minute walk from Kawaguchiko Station on the Fujikyuko Line and right in front of the Retro Bus stop at Oki, making it a practical base for a family trip.

Five Kura Storehouse-Style Rental Villas in Funatsu, Lake Kawaguchi

Kuranoyado Matsuya Kawaguchiko is a group of cottages and rental villas designed in the style of traditional kura storehouses, in the Funatsu area by Lake Kawaguchi. Each of the 5 buildings has its own distinctive kura design, and the property makes a point of the surprise on first entering: the exteriors look solid and closed, but the interiors are unexpectedly open. The concept is aimed at first-timers and seasoned cottage travelers alike.

Shigaraki-Ware Open-Air Baths and Room Types

Every building has a Shigaraki-ware open-air bath for private use, available from late March to late December (it cannot be used in winter). Room types include rental villas with a Shigaraki-ware open-air bath and a living room under a high open ceiling, arranged as Japanese-Western style rooms for anywhere from 2 to 10 guests, suiting both families and groups. Each building also has a separate en-suite bathroom.

All-Weather BBQ Building and Self-Catering Kitchens

An all-weather BBQ building stands on the grounds, and BBQ grills are available to borrow; guests bring their own ingredients, seasonings and drinks. The BBQ building is closed from December through March. Each building's kitchen comes with an induction cooktop, rice cooker, microwave, toaster, pots, frying pans and tableware, so you can bring ingredients and cook for yourselves. A convenience store and a supermarket are within walking distance, and delivery from a butcher shop can also be arranged.

Staying Here with Children

Summer plans include one that comes with a welcome ice cream for children and one with games available to borrow, so the property is run with families in mind. All children are charged the same rate as adults, and co-sleeping is limited to one child under school age per 2 adults. Children's yukata are not provided, so please bring your own. All buildings are non-smoking, with a smoking area in front of each building's entrance.

The Care Behind the Kura Design

The 5 buildings, with names such as Ichi-no-Kura, Ni-no-Kura and San-no-Kura, each have their own distinctive kura storehouse design, and Mount Fuji can be seen from every one of them. What defines a stay here is the spaciousness inside, far beyond what you would expect of a storehouse, and the living rooms and bedrooms that blend Japanese and Western styles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we stay here with young children?

expand_more

Is there an extra charge for the open-air bath?

expand_more

Every building has an open-air bath, and there is no additional charge to use it. You can bathe as often as you like, at any time from check-in until checkout. Note that the open-air baths can be used only from late March to late December.

Can we change the number of guests after booking?
