The tricky part is the drive home on the Aqua-Line. The northbound side backs up almost every Sunday evening, so it is far more comfortable to head back in the 3 p.m. hour, or to add one more night and drive home on Monday morning. ETC off-peak toll discounts help too. Kamogawa Sea World gets crowded at the gate and at show times, so buying tickets online in advance is the safer move. Strollers are available to rent inside (300 yen), but numbers are limited, so bringing a baby carrier is reassuring. Mother Farm is free for children age 3 and under and has a baby room at every gate. Boso stays mild even in winter, but the sea wind is chilly, so packing one thin windproof layer keeps children from getting fussy.
Best season
Spring (March to May) is the best season with children: rape blossoms, poppies, and strawberry picking make being outdoors a pleasure. Summer (July and August) is the peak of sea bathing and kids' pools, though hotels with pools fill up 3 to 4 months ahead. Winter is mild in Boso as well, so flower picking or mandarin orange picking pairs easily with a hot spring.
Getting there
About 1 to 1.5 hours by car from Tokyo via the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line (Kisarazu and Futtsu are closer still). By train, take the JR Uchibo Line toward Tateyama, or the Sotobo Line toward Kamogawa. The limited express from Tokyo Station to Kamogawa takes about 2 hours.
