Guests stay in private rooms or a large tatami room designed under the supervision of the interior brand ACTUS, and the property is packed with play and learning for children: a library with about 25,000 comics and picture books, an atelier for drawing and simple crafts, a campfire held to the sound of the waves, and seasonal vegetable harvesting at the farm on the grounds. The bath draws Minamiboso Onsen, a natural hot spring found deep in the hills of Chikura and known as a bath that leaves skin smooth, and a baby bathing set is available to borrow, making it a good fit for a family trip by the sea.

Chikura Tsunagu Hotel is a hands-on resort hotel in the mild-climate town of Chikura in Minamiboso, Chiba, created by renovating Seizanso, a retreat lodge of a national elementary school. ACTUS Co., Ltd., which produces its own original interior brand, gave full cooperation as design supervisor for the renovation, turning the building into a calming space that feels somehow nostalgic even on a first visit. Built on the concept of "not just staying, but making the most of the whole town," the hotel puts real-world experiences at its heart to help children develop their ability to think and to solve problems on their own.

The Bath Fed by Chikura's Natural Onsen

The bath measures about 40 sq m and is fed by Minamiboso Onsen, a natural hot spring found deep in the hills of Chikura. Known as a bath that leaves skin smooth, it has a silky feel and warms you from the inside out. The spring water is a mildly alkaline sodium chloride and bicarbonate spring. Hours are 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. the next morning and 5 a.m. to 10 a.m., with 6 showers in the men's bath and 5 in the women's bath. The bathtubs are for children who are out of diapers and older, and children who have not yet started elementary school use them accompanied by an adult. For babies who are not yet out of diapers, a baby bathing set and children's amenities are available to borrow, and there is also a shower space in the outdoor garden.

A Building Full of Play and Learning for Children

Seizan Cafe, the cafe building at the heart of the hotel, was once the dining hall and has been renovated around natural wood. The atelier on its second floor is an open space with a view of the sea where children can draw and do simple crafts, so there is plenty to do even on rainy days. Minna no Toshokan (Everyone's Library) on the second floor of the annex holds about 25,000 comics and picture books, and the 45 sq m recreation room can be used as a play space for children or for meetings and training sessions. In the evening, a campfire is held to the sound of the waves, except in rainy weather. At Chikura Tsunagu Farm on the grounds, families can harvest seasonal vegetables, and nearby there are nature experiences such as harvesting sugarcane and making freshly pressed juice.

Guest Rooms

There are 9 rooms in all. Eight private rooms reflect the ACTUS aesthetic, with loft-style bunk beds and Simmons mattresses, and each sleeps up to 4. The remaining room is the large tatami room used for seaside school programs back in the Seizanso days, with futon bedding for up to 12; it is also a good choice for family groups with small children who prefer to sleep on futons. The bath and toilets are shared, separated for men and women, and there are steps. Guests in junior high school and above pay the adult rate, elementary school children pay 75% of the adult rate, children from age 3 up to elementary school age pay 50%, and children under 3 stay free when co-sleeping.
