forumWhat families say
Rakuten Travel rating 4.56 out of 5 (1,420 reviews). Many guests mention the convenient spot in front of Iseshi Station for visiting Ise Grand Shrine. The in-room open-air baths and the meals are highly rated, and guests say the lobby is well stocked with drinks and ice cream. One point to note: a guest wrote that the dinner course took 90 minutes, which may be hard with small children.

Overview
Ise Shinsen is an onsen ryokan a 1-minute walk from Iseshi Station and a 5-minute walk from Geku, the Outer Shrine of Ise Grand Shrine. All 45 rooms have an open-air onsen bath fed by the ryokan's own hot spring source. Children who are not yet out of diapers cannot use the communal bath, but they can use the open-air bath in your room. Room options include Japanese-Western rooms with a raised tatami platform (up to 4 guests) and suites with a Japanese-style tatami room (up to 5 guests), where futon bedding can be added so the whole family sleeps together. Cribs, bed guards, strollers and other items are available to borrow, and there are kids' kaiseki (multi-course Japanese) meals and kids' plates as well.
Rooms
All 45 rooms come with an open-air onsen bath fed by the ryokan's own hot spring source, and each also has an indoor shower booth. The Japanese-Western rooms have a raised tatami platform and sleep up to 4 guests once futon bedding is laid out. The suites sleep up to 5 guests, with futon bedding laid out in the Japanese-style tatami room. Room sizes are listed differently depending on where you look: the ryokan's own room guide gives 48 sq m for the Japanese-Western and Western-style rooms and 96 sq m for the suites, while plan listings on Rakuten Travel and Ikyu.com (a Japanese booking site) show about 33 sq m and about 69 sq m. The Japanese-Western and Western-style rooms have two 110 cm x 200 cm beds, and the suites have two 130 cm x 200 cm beds. Western-style rooms sleep 2 or 3 guests, with a sofa bed used for the third guest. Children aged 12 and under pay a facility fee of 1,045 yen per night, plus a futon fee of 3,300 yen per night if they use futon bedding; ages 13 and over pay the adult rate. According to the plan information, up to 2 babies and toddlers can co-sleep without bedding, for a facility fee of 1,045 yen per night; on breakfast-included plans, adding breakfast makes it 2,090 yen. If you would like the two beds pushed together, request it when booking (possible only in some Japanese-Western and Western-style rooms). Depending on the room type, pushing the beds against the wall may not be possible. There are no barrier-free rooms. In the suites a wheelchair can move around the room except in the toilet and bathroom, while in the Western-style and Japanese-Western rooms the entrance is too narrow, so the wheelchair has to be left outside the door. The corridors have no steps, and elevators connect the floors. Every room has a humidifying air purifier.
Dining
Meals are served at the Japanese restaurant Isegin, where each table for 2 to 4 guests is partitioned off as a private or semi-private room. Dinner has four seatings, starting at 6 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., and breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., with last entry at 10 a.m. Children cannot be left in the room while parents go to eat. In-room dining is not offered, but room service from the nearby restaurant Ise Amimoto Shokudo is available from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. For children there is a kids' kaiseki (a multi-course Japanese meal) at 3,740 yen, a kids' plate at 1,870 yen, a kids' breakfast at 1,045 yen and kids' udon at 440 yen, among other options, and plain rice and rice porridge are free of charge. For dinner, upper elementary school children have the kids' kaiseki, while lower elementary school children and children who have not yet started elementary school have the kids' plate. High chairs for children are available without reservation, though numbers are limited. Baby food is not provided, but staff will warm baby food you bring. Only ready-made baby food, such as retort pouches, and formula may be brought into the restaurant. Food allergies are accommodated as far as possible if you get in touch at least 5 days before your stay, but allergies to seafood in general cannot be accommodated, and because everything is cooked in the same kitchen, the allergy menu is not completely allergen-free.
Baths and Onsen
The communal bath Kiyonagisa on the 5th floor has indoor and open-air baths plus a sauna and a cold plunge bath. It is open from 5 a.m. to midnight, except from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., when it closes for cleaning. The spring water is a sodium-chloride-bicarbonate spring. Children wearing diapers cannot use the communal bath, but once they are out of diapers, even small children can bathe there with a guardian. The men's and women's baths are not swapped, and the age limit for children entering the opposite sex's bath follows Mie Prefecture's ordinance. There is no private-hire bath or family bath, so with a child who is not yet out of diapers you will be bathing in your room's open-air bath. The communal bath has no children's amenities or items to borrow.
