Kusatsu Onsen Boun is a long-established ryokan a 3-minute walk from the Yubatake in Kusatsu Onsen, with 6 baths fed by two spring sources, Sai no Kawara and Bandaiko. Of its 38 rooms, every room in the new Main Building has an indoor bath with natural onsen water, and Unshoan has rooms with their own open-air bath as well as Japanese-Western rooms that sleep from 2 to 7 guests. Children are welcome to stay, but the conditions differ from room to room: the Unshoan twin rooms do not accept children, and children aged 12 and under cannot stay in the 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms of the Main Building. There is no private-hire bath.
Rooms
The ryokan has 38 rooms in total, spread across two buildings: the Main Building and Unshoan. The Japanese-Western rooms with an onsen indoor bath in the new Main Building, which opened in January 2025, consist of an 8-tatami Japanese-style tatami room with a broad window-side space and a Western-style living room with semi-double beds, and they come with an indoor bath of natural onsen water flowing straight from the source, plus a toilet and a powder room. The Unshoan Japanese-style tatami rooms with an open-air bath have 12.5 tatami mats plus a 6-tatami broad window-side space, and they have their own open-air bath fed by the Sai no Kawara spring source, along with a shower room, a toilet and a washbasin. For families, the Unshoan Japanese-Western rooms, which sleep from 2 to 7 guests, are a good fit. The Unshoan twin rooms (30 sq m), on the other hand, do not accept children, and children aged 12 and under cannot stay in the 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms of the Main Building either, which sleep 2 to 5 guests.
Dining
Dishes are made with local specialties and seasonal ingredients and brought out in four or five separate servings, so that hot food is enjoyed hot and cold food cold. Dinner is served either in your room or in a private room, and you cannot choose which; breakfast is served in the dining area. There is also a private dining room called Unrei. Food allergies and ingredients you would rather avoid must be reported at least one week before the date of your stay; complete removal of allergens cannot be accommodated, and requests made on the day or shortly beforehand cannot be accommodated either. As a guide, infants and toddlers are charged 50% of the adult rate when meals and bedding are included, and 20% when bedding is included but meals are not; the number of meals a child receives follows the meal conditions of the accommodation plan.
Baths and Onsen
Six baths, including open-air baths, draw on two spring sources, Sai no Kawara and Bandaiko, and all of them flow straight from the source without recirculation. Saunas were added later to the communal baths Bandai no Yu and Nishi no Yu. There is no private-hire bath, so if you want to soak just with your family, the way to do it is to choose a room with an open-air bath or an onsen indoor bath. The baths can be used from check-in at 2 p.m. until checkout at 10 a.m., apart from two hours in the early morning, from 3 a.m. to 5 a.m., when they are closed for cleaning and for the swap between the men's and women's baths.
Family-Friendly Features
Children are welcome to stay. Note, however, that the Unshoan twin rooms do not accept children, and children aged 12 and under cannot stay in the 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms of the Main Building. Co-sleeping is available up to age 5, and children aged 2 and under stay free of charge when they have no meals and no bedding. Infants and toddlers who need meals or bedding are accepted at between 20% and 50% of the adult rate, and you need to note in the comments field when booking that you are bringing a child aged 2 or under. For elementary school children, both in the lower and upper grades, the guide rate is 70% of the adult rate.
Access
The ryokan is a 3-minute walk from the Yubatake, the heart of the hot spring town. It is 20 minutes by car from Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station on the JR Agatsuma Line, and a 7-minute walk from the Kusatsu Bus Terminal. If you contact the ryokan after you arrive at the bus terminal, you can use the free shuttle, which keeps the trip easier even with small children. There are 50 free parking spaces on the grounds, available from around noon on the day you arrive.
