Yuyado Tokinoniwa is an onsen ryokan set on high ground in Kusatsu Onsen, with an in-room open-air bath in every room. Guests can work their way around 23 kinds of baths fed by two hot spring sources, and the three private-hire baths - a cypress bath, a rock-wall bath and a stone bath - are free to use with no reservation needed. For families, rates are set according to whether a child co-sleeps and whether babies and toddlers have meals and bedding, and children who have not yet started elementary school are served a kids' meal. A separate facility use fee applies to children under school age who are aged 3 and over.
Rooms
This onsen ryokan has an in-room open-air bath in every room. The water for the in-room open-air baths comes from the Yukawa no Yu source, and rather than flowing continuously from the source, the bath is filled with onsen water for you to use. There are five room types. Japanese-Western Room A (36 sq m, sleeps 3) separates the bedroom from the living area and has two 100 cm-wide Japanese-style beds, with one of the three guests using a futon. The roomier Japanese-Western Room B (40-46 sq m) sleeps 2-4 guests and has two 100 cm-wide Japanese-style beds. The Double Room (24 sq m, sleeps 2) has one 180 cm-wide Japanese-style double bed, the Suite Room (54 sq m, sleeps 5) has two Western-style beds, and the Deluxe Suite (67 sq m, sleeps 6) has two Western-style beds plus two Japanese-style beds, making it well suited to families and small groups.
Dining
Dinner at the dining room Yuzan is a monthly-changing Japanese kaiseki course served in two seatings, from 5:30 p.m. and from 8 p.m.; you choose your time at check-in on a first-come, first-served basis. Breakfast is a set meal served from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., with last orders at 9 a.m. Elementary school children are served the same dishes as adults at both dinner and breakfast, while children under school age are served a kids' meal at both. If you would like a kids' meal for an elementary school child, the booking must be made under the younger children's category. For food allergies, a low-allergen menu covering the 28 specified ingredients can be prepared, and it must be requested by 2 days before the date of your stay. Allergies to ingredients outside those 28 items, and changes to cooking methods, cannot be accommodated.
Baths and Onsen
There are 23 kinds of baths in all, fed by two hot spring sources. The two communal baths, Toki no Yu and Inishie no Yu, alternate between men and women. Toki no Yu has 5 baths on each of the men's and women's sides, along with ganbanyoku (a heated-stone sauna) and a sauna, while Inishie no Yu has 4 baths on each side. There are also three private-hire baths - a cypress bath, a rock-wall bath and a stone bath - which are free to use and do not take reservations; if one is vacant you may use it freely, taking your turn on the day. The communal baths have a baby bath and a bath chair, so bathing with babies and young children is easy. Guests with tattoos are asked to refrain from using the communal baths.
Family-Friendly Features
Children are welcome to stay. Depending on the plan, co-sleeping is available for up to 1 child or up to 3 children. For babies and toddlers, the rate is 50% of the adult rate when both meals and bedding are included, and free of charge when neither is included; combinations of bedding without meals, or meals without bedding, cannot be accepted. A separate facility use fee of 2,200 yen applies to children aged 3 and over who have not yet started elementary school, and guests aged 12 and over pay a separate bathing tax of 150 yen. Children's amenities and children's samue (a two-piece Japanese-style loungewear set) are also provided.

From Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station on the JR Agatsuma Line, a local bus takes about 25 minutes to the Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal, and a dedicated shuttle bus takes about 5 minutes from there. The free shuttle bus from the Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal runs on a fixed schedule and needs no reservation. A free shuttle bus from Karuizawa Station is also available with advance reservation and takes about 70 minutes. Parking for 70 cars is available free of charge.
