Kokuminsyuku Senjyouten is a kokuminshukusha (a public lodge) standing on the Sea of Japan coast in Hamada, Shimane. It has 19 guest rooms in Japanese-style tatami and Western styles, and the top-floor communal bath looks out over the Sea of Japan. Guest rooms have a toilet but no bath, so bathing is done in the communal bath. Meals feature local seafood, and some plans let guests enjoy dinner in their room. Most accommodation plans have child rates, and the adjoining glamping site can be used by families as well.
Rooms
There are Japanese-style tatami rooms and Western-style rooms. The tatami rooms come in three sizes - 6, 8 and 10 tatami mats - and the Western-style rooms have 2 beds and a sofa. There are 19 rooms in total. Room types include ocean-view Japanese-style tatami rooms of 8 and 6 tatami mats (with a toilet but no bath, for 1-4 guests or 1-2 guests), mountain-side tatami rooms of 8 and 6 tatami mats without a sea view, and mountain-side twin rooms. Guest rooms have no bathroom of their own, so guests bathe in the communal bath. Most accommodation plans have child rates. Rooms have a hair dryer, and humidifiers are available to borrow.
Dining
Restaurant Shiokaze on the first floor serves lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (last order) and dinner from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. (last order, reservations required). At dinner you can watch the sun set over the Sea of Japan and the lights of the fishing boats, and at breakfast you look out over the waves. Depending on the plan, you can also choose in-room dining, with dinner served in your room and breakfast at the restaurant. The menu centers on kaiseki course cuisine made with seafood from nearby Hamada Port, such as nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch), horse mackerel and flounder, and meals accommodating allergies can be arranged.
Baths
The top floor of the main building has a communal bath with sweeping views of the Sea of Japan, offering three kinds of bath: an uchiburo bath, a plain hot-water bath and a bubble bath. The communal bath is on the 4th floor, so you can take in the whole of the Hamada Coast while you soak. It is open from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the evening and from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. in the morning. The water is what is called a Herustone artificial hot spring, described as an artificial bath similar to an onsen. As guest rooms have no bathroom, families bathing with young children also use this communal bath.
