Hatago Oda Onsen is an onsen ryokan founded in 1922 (Taisho 11), standing on the banks of the Oda River in Taki-cho, Izumo, Shimane. It has its own spring source and just six rooms. The whole building is wooden, in the shin-sukiya style (a refined take on traditional tea-house architecture). No slippers are set out inside, and the floors are wiped down with water every day, so even small children can walk around barefoot. Meals come only on plans that include both dinner and breakfast. Elementary school children are served a kids' kaiseki (a multi-course Japanese meal) or a kids' bento (boxed meal), and children aged 3 to 5 get a kids' meal. There are two baths, Hiten-no-Yu and Ryusen-no-Yu, plus a separate private-hire bath, Toyotama-no-Yu, which requires a reservation. There is no pool.
Rooms
The ryokan was founded in 1922 (Taisho 11), and the current building, newly built in 1988 (Showa 63), is entirely wooden in the shin-sukiya style (a refined take on traditional tea-house architecture). It has six rooms, each with its own character and size. So that guests can feel the energy of the wood, no slippers are set out inside. The floors are wiped down with water every day, so even small children can walk barefoot. Every room has its own toilet. The Ran no Ma is an 8-tatami Japanese-style tatami room with a 4-tatami attic room attached. That 4-tatami space, named Okomori-beya (the "hideaway room"), is a hit with guests, who say it feels like a child's secret base. The Hagi no Ma is a Japanese-Western room: a 21-tatami space divided up and furnished with a dining table and beds. The Kiku no Ma can feel cramped for three guests including a child. Because the building is wooden, sound from the next room can carry.
Dining
There are no room-only or breakfast-only plans; every plan includes dinner and breakfast. Dinner is served in a private room for each group at the adjoining Saryo Seisentei, and breakfast is in the restaurant of the same tea house. For children, upper-grade elementary school children get a kids' kaiseki (a multi-course Japanese meal), lower-grade elementary school children a kids' bento (boxed meal), and children aged 3 to 5 a kids' meal. Children of elementary school age and under who would like the same kaiseki as the adults pay the adult rate minus 2,200 yen. Allergies are accommodated as far as possible if you let the ryokan know in advance, but requests made on the day may not be possible. In the Hagi no Ma, in-room dining is also available for an additional 2,200 yen per person.
Baths and Onsen
The spring source lies in the bed of the Oda River, which flows right beside the ryokan, so the water comes from the ryokan's own source. There are two baths, Hiten-no-Yu and Ryusen-no-Yu, open from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the evening and from 6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the morning. Toyotama-no-Yu, a private-hire bath added in 2021, costs 2,500 yen for 50 minutes and requires a reservation. Because it is barrier-free, everyone from families with small children to older guests can use it. It is currently offered to staying guests in the evening only. There are no guest rooms with their own open-air bath or indoor bath.
Family-Friendly Features
The ryokan has baby chairs and toddler chairs, a humidifier is available to borrow for your room, and the guest-room amenities include children's yukata. Note, however, that co-sleeping arrangements covering only the entry fee, only futon bedding or only meals are offered at a special price, so they do not include amenities such as bath towels, yukata or toothbrushes. Amenities are included from the plans for children under school age priced from 7,900 yen. The children's service plans without amenities (meals only or futon bedding only), aimed at children who have not yet started elementary school, can be booked only by phone or through the ryokan's own website. For children under 3 with no meals and no futon bedding, the entry fee is 1,800 yen, and it is waived when you book by phone. Even when no charge applies, please always let the ryokan know in advance if you are bringing a baby or other young child. If bedwetting or a similar accident soaks through below the mattress pad, 3,500 yen per futon is charged toward the cleaning cost, and a bedwetting coverage option at 1,000 yen per child can be added when booking.
Access
The ryokan is an 8-minute walk from JR Oda Station, and the shuttle runs even for a single guest. There is free parking for about 10 cars on the grounds, and a ramp entrance lets guests be shown from the parking area to their room without any steps. The Sea of Japan is 400 m away, and Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine is 20 minutes by car. Check-in is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., and checkout is at 10 a.m. Pets are not allowed inside the building.
