forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 3.69 out of 5 (2,726 reviews). Guests praise the seafood, freshly fried tempura and sushi at the dinner buffet, and some say the pancakes at breakfast are likely to please children. Guests describe the baths as clean and pleasant. The main caveat is the age of the building: many enjoy it as Showa-era retro charm, while others point out signs of wear. The hotel is on a hilltop with many slopes, and coming by car is recommended.

Overview

Hatoya Hotel (Ito Onsen) is a resort hotel in Ito Onsen. Its communal bath is filled with naturally gushing onsen water from the hotel's own 5 spring sources, flowing straight from the source, and the in-room bath in every guest room uses natural onsen water too. The rooms are mainly Japanese-style tatami rooms: the 10-tatami rooms in the Main Building sleep up to 5, and the roughly 12-tatami rooms in the New Building sleep up to 7. The indoor pool has a pool for young children and can be used all year round. Children's rates are 70% of the adult rate for elementary school children and 50% for children aged 4 and over who have not yet started elementary school. Children aged 1 to 3 pay a facility usage fee of 3,300 yen, which does not include meals or futon bedding. Baby beds and baby baths are provided for the communal bath, and for children aged 0 to 3, baby food (ready-made rice porridge or udon) is provided free of charge with advance reservation.

Rooms

The guest rooms are mainly Japanese-style tatami rooms, each with a bath and toilet. "Main Building" is the general name for the 10-tatami rooms that sleep up to 5 guests, and some of these rooms are in a separate building. The New Building has larger rooms of about 12 tatami mats that sleep up to 7 guests. Rooms look out over the mountains or the town, and an ocean-side room can be requested for an additional charge. The special rooms come in one of three layouts: two Japanese-style tatami rooms, a tatami room plus a Western-style room, or a tatami room plus a Western-style room with twin beds. The hotel chooses the layout, and these rooms take 2 to 7 guests. In the layout with twin beds, you can either lay out futons in the tatami room or sleep in the beds. Twin rooms can take up to 3 guests with an extra bed (a sofa bed).

Dining

On buffet plans, dinner and breakfast are served in the restaurant, though on some days the meal may be a Japanese set meal instead. On some days the dinner buffet runs in several sittings. On special-room plans, dinner is planned as a Japanese seafood set meal in the restaurant, except on Saturdays and certain other dates. Meals are served in the restaurant and in dining rooms; in-room dining is not available. A cotton candy corner is set up when the buffet is served. The Kutsurogi no Ryotei Plan has you dine in a private Japanese-style dining room. The restaurant has children's bibs and two types of children's chairs, in limited numbers.

Baby food is provided free of charge for infants who stay free and for young children on the facility usage fee: one pouch of ready-made rice porridge or udon per child per meal, with advance reservation required. You pick it up at the front desk along with tableware and a spoon, warm it yourself in the heater in the lobby, and eat it in the dining venue or your room. Kids' meals are not mentioned, so please ask before booking. The kitchen does not accommodate food allergies.

Baths and Onsen

The spring water is an alkaline simple onsen. The communal bath flows straight from the source and is open through the night, except during cleaning from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m. and from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. You can use it from 8:30 a.m. on your check-in day until 3 p.m. on your checkout day. Baby beds, baby baths, baby bath chairs, and kids' soap and shampoo are provided for the communal bath, so you can lay your child on a baby bed in the changing room while you get dressed (limited numbers). There is one floor of stairs at the entrance to the communal bath, and in some places you move between floors by escalator.

The in-room bath in every guest room also uses natural onsen water, so you can enjoy the onsen with your child in your own room. Because the water is piped in from the source, it takes about 10 to 15 minutes before it reaches the room at a steady temperature. Start running the water early, and fill the tub once it runs hot. Whether children who are not yet out of diapers may get into the tubs of the communal bath is not stated, so please check in advance. Guests with tattoos cannot use the communal bath or the pool, even if the tattoos are covered with stickers or a rash guard.

Family-Friendly Features

Children's rates are 70% of the adult rate for elementary school children (with meals and futon bedding) and 50% for children aged 4 and over who have not yet started elementary school (with meals and futon bedding). Children aged 1 to 3 pay a facility usage fee of 3,300 yen (no meals or futon bedding). If you want meals for them, apply in advance for a fee; on most plans the deadline is 4 p.m. on the day, and on the Itacho Tokusen Omotenashi Plan it is the day before. If you want both meals and futon bedding for a child aged 3 or under, booking at the 50% young-child rate may work out cheaper. Do not include infants aged 0 in the number of guests when booking; just note them in the remarks field, because entering them in the guest count means they are charged. Young children on the facility usage fee only and infants aged 0 do not get futon bedding.

A basket-type bed for infants (a portable bassinet) and a diaper bin are available to borrow with advance reservation. The hotel also keeps children's pillows, bedwetting sheets, a water pillow and a thermometer on hand, all in limited numbers. There is a children's yukata corner in the building, and yukata for a height of around 150 cm are provided for elementary school children. For children under school age on the half-price rate, yukata, towels, toothbrushes and similar items carry a fee. The paid yukata come in one size only, so bringing sleepwear that fits your child is recommended. Children aged 4 and over who have not yet started elementary school do not get amenities, but they do get futon bedding. There are washing machines and a spin dryer, and the self-service coin laundry corner is free of charge.

Play Areas and Pool

The indoor pool has a pool for young children and can be used all year round. It is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., from 8:30 a.m. on your check-in day and until 3 p.m. on your checkout day. The depth of the pool for young children has not been published. The shop sells swim pants for young children (swim diapers), children's goggles and swim rings, but whether children in diapers may use the pool is not stated, so please check before booking. You may bring your own swim ring, though large floats may be restricted when it is crowded. The pool is also closed while the baths are being cleaned. There are 3 table tennis tables, free to use (15-minute turns when busy), and a game arcade open from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

As a guest benefit, you can use the Sea Adventure Area at the sister hotel Sun Hatoya free of charge once per night of your stay. It includes Osakana Buro (fish bath), Kodai Beach and Nagisa Beach, an outdoor area open in summer only. Pick up your ticket at the Hatoya Hotel front desk. It can be used from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on your arrival day and from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on your checkout day. You travel to Sun Hatoya on Hatoya Hotel's free shuttle bus: the 10:45 a.m. bus goes direct, the buses from 12:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. require a change at Ito Station, and the 5:10 p.m. bus from Sun Hatoya goes direct to Hatoya Hotel.
