About Izu Peninsula
The Izu Peninsula sits at the eastern edge of Shizuoka Prefecture and juts about 50 km to the south. Its eastern coast faces Sagami Bay and its western coast faces Suruga Bay, with Cape Irozaki at the southern tip. Apart from the northern part, mountains cover most of the peninsula, so flat land is limited. Hot springs bubble up in many places, and people also enjoy swimming at the beach, surfing, and scuba diving. The coastline and mountain ridges such as Mt. Amagi are part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, and the whole peninsula makes up the Izu Peninsula Geopark.

Travel tips
The Izu Peninsula is long from north to south, and getting between areas takes time. With young children, it works well to narrow your plans down to one or two bases and spend your time around them. Roads along the coast tend to get crowded on weekends during the busy travel seasons, so leave plenty of time in your schedule. Choosing a hotel with indoor play space, such as a kids' room, also makes it easier to handle sudden changes in the weather.
Best season
Swimming at the beach peaks from July to August, and places like Shirahama Ohama Beach in Shimoda get lively. When the heat or cold is harsh, switching to mostly indoor activities keeps things comfortable. Spring and fall have mild weather and are also good for easy walks with young children.
Getting there
Shinkansen bullet trains stop at Atami Station and Mishima Station. Buses on the peninsula are run by Tokai Bus, Izuhakone Bus, Fujikyu City Bus, and others.
