forumWhat families say
Rakuten Travel rating 4.65 out of 5 (171 reviews). Guests report that upper-grade elementary school children could eat their fill of a dinner close to the adult menu. The private-hire family baths can be used without a reservation when they are not in use, and guests praise the open-air baths and the family bath with a waterfall bath (utaseyu). The hospitality of the okami (the ryokan's proprietress) and the rest of the staff is also rated highly. One caution guests raise is that stairs are the only way to reach the dining area and the baths, which makes the ryokan hard to use for guests with limited mobility.

Overview
Sujiyu Onsen Ryokan Shirataki is a 10-room Japanese-style ryokan in Sujiyu Onsen, tucked into the mountains of Kokonoe. Every room is a 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami room facing the river, sleeping 1 to 5 guests. The onsen flows straight from the source, with separate open-air baths for men and women plus 4 private-hire family baths that staying guests can use free of charge, so the whole family can soak together. For dinner, young children under school age and lower-grade elementary school children have a kids' meal, while upper-grade elementary school children have a children's kaiseki course. Please note that the building has 3 floors and no elevator, and that multi-night stays are not accepted.
Rooms
There are 10 guest rooms, and every one is a 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami room facing the river. Each sleeps 1 to 5 guests, and for groups of 5 or more you need to contact the ryokan. There are two room types, All Rooms Riverside (10-Tatami Japanese-Style Room) and the Japanese-style room with a semi-open-air bath, and both are 10 tatami mats. The Japanese-style room with a semi-open-air bath is limited to 2 rooms, each with a roofed open-air bath outside the room facing the mountain stream, with water flowing straight from the source that you can use 24 hours a day. Every room has a refrigerator, a toilet, a washbasin, a hair dryer and more, and each one has its own balcony. The rooms are heated by the onsen, but the walk to the baths can be a little cold, so in winter guests are advised to put on a haori (a light Japanese jacket) or another warm layer before heading over. Depending on the weather and the season, you may also see a sky full of stars or fireflies.
Dining
Breakfast and dinner are both served in the dining area; in-room dining is not available. Dinner starts at 6 p.m., and breakfast is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. The dining area has small private rooms for small groups, but they cannot be reserved. Children's meals come in two categories: a children's kaiseki course for upper-grade elementary school children, and a kids' meal for lower-grade elementary school children and young children who have not yet started elementary school. When booking, write your child's actual age in the notes field. Individual requests such as vegan or vegetarian meals are not accommodated. Allergy accommodation is not stated, so please confirm with the ryokan if you need it. There are no restaurants or convenience stores near the ryokan, and on plans without dinner you cannot order dinner on the day of check-in.
Baths and Onsen
The water at Sujiyu Onsen is a sodium chloride spring, and the open-air baths, private-hire baths and in-room open-air baths all flow straight from the source (with water added). The separate open-air baths for men and women are reached by going down a flight of stairs, so getting there with small children means taking the stairs. The open-air baths are open from 5 a.m. to midnight. The only indoor baths are the private-hire baths. There are 4 private-hire family baths, each with its own character: Yasuragi no Yu, Miharashi no Yu, Ikoi no Yu and Fureai no Yu. Staying guests can use them free of charge from 5 a.m. to midnight, and two of them, Yasuragi no Yu and Miharashi no Yu, are available 24 hours a day. Fureai no Yu is roomy enough for the whole family to relax in together, and it also has a waterfall bath (utaseyu). It is not stated whether children in diapers may get into the baths, so please confirm with the ryokan. A bathing tax of 150 yen is paid separately on site for adults and children alike. Towels are not provided in the changing rooms, so bring the towels from your room or ones you can borrow free of charge at the front desk. There is a footbath a 2-minute walk from the ryokan.
Family-Friendly Features

According to the rate table for the same Ikyu.com plans, co-sleeping is available for up to 2 children. The number of meals for children follows the meal terms of your plan. Whether cribs or baby futons are available is not stated, so please confirm with the ryokan if you need them. The building has 3 floors and no elevator, so strollers and luggage have to be carried on the stairs. There is no childcare service and there are no barrier-free facilities. Multi-night stays are not accepted. Check-in is from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. On plans with dinner, dinner starts for all guests at the same time, 6 p.m., so please check in by 6 p.m. Checkout is at 10 a.m. Late checkout until 11 a.m. is available for an extension fee of 2,000 yen per hour (before tax).
