About Tadewara Wetland
Tadewara Wetland sits in Chojabaru, Kokonoe Town, Kusu District, Oita Prefecture, within Aso-Kuju National Park. It covers 38 hectares at an elevation of 1,000 to 1,040 m, and together with Bogatsuru it is one of the largest intermediate moors (wetlands that sit between fens and bogs) in Japan. It was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland (a site protected under the international wetland treaty) in 2005. Boardwalks run through the wetland, where you can see plants such as masugaya (a wetland grass) and sphagnum moss, and the grassland scenery is kept alive by controlled burning every year. The Chojabaru Visitor Center stands at the entrance.

Travel tips
Stopping by the Chojabaru Visitor Center before or after your walk gives you up-to-date information on the plants and wildlife of the season, which makes walking with children even more fun. At an elevation of about 1,000 m, temperatures tend to be lower than on flat land, so even in summer it is reassuring to bring a light layer for mornings and evenings. Nature walks led by members of the Kokonoe no Shizen wo Mamoru Kai (a local group dedicated to protecting Kokonoe's nature) are also held.
Best season
In spring, the grass is burned in a controlled fire in March and April, and after the wetland is covered in black, yellow kisumire violets bloom across the dark ground. In the grassland from August to September, the highlight is higotai, a plant with ball-shaped flowers in a deep lapis blue. The scenery changes with each season, so choose the time of your visit with that in mind.
Getting there
It is about 30 minutes by car from Kokonoe IC on the Oita Expressway.
